Question 1

What are the key specifications of this gennaker?

Accepted Answer

This is a NEW 33m² Yellow / White Gennaker manufactured by North Sails. Its dimensions are:

Sail Area: 33 square meters
Luff: 10.05 meters
Foot: 5.21 meters
Leech: 9.35 meters

It is made from Nylon and comes with a sail bag.

Question 2

What type of sailing is this gennaker designed for?

Accepted Answer

A gennaker is an asymmetrical sail, a hybrid between a genoa and a spinnaker, designed for downwind and reaching courses. It is particularly effective in light to moderate winds, typically ranging from 5 to 20 knots. Gennakers are known for being easier to handle and trim compared to traditional spinnakers, making them suitable for both cruising sailors and club racers looking to enhance offwind performance.

Question 3

What are the benefits of a gennaker made from Nylon?

Accepted Answer

Nylon is a preferred material for gennakers and spinnakers due to its lightweight nature, durability, and ability to handle the specific forces of downwind sailing. It allows for the creation of large, full shapes that effectively capture wind from broader angles. North Sails often uses its innovative NORLON™ fabrics for gennakers, which feature an extremely flat weave to minimize airflow through the fabric and enhance stability.

Question 4

How should I care for and store this gennaker?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends the life and performance of your gennaker. Always ensure the sail is dry and free from salt and dirt before storage, as these can degrade the fabric. Avoid leaving the sail exposed to direct sunlight when not in use, as UV rays can cause the cloth to break down. When storing, fold or roll the gennaker, varying the fold lines to prevent permanent creases. Store it in its provided sailbag in a clean, dry place, protected from pests.

Question 5

What boat size or type is this 33m² gennaker suitable for?

Accepted Answer

The suitability of a gennaker depends primarily on your boat’s specific dimensions, particularly the luff length (the distance from the tack point to the halyard exit at the masthead). A 33m² gennaker is generally suited for smaller to medium-sized cruising or club racing yachts. To determine the best fit, measure your boat’s maximum luff length, then subtract approximately 20 cm to allow for proper sail trim and stretch. Consulting your boat’s ‘I’ (halyard height) and ‘J’ (foretriangle base) measurements can also help ensure compatibility.

Question 6

Why is this gennaker listed as "New" on Resail, a marketplace for used sails?

Accepted Answer

While Resail specializes in giving high-quality used sails a second life, we occasionally offer new sails, such as this North Sails gennaker. This allows us to provide a comprehensive range of options for sailors who prioritize performance and sustainability. Our mission is to make sustainable sailing accessible, and by offering both pre-owned and new, proven sails, we support sailors in making choices that align with their needs and contribute to reducing environmental impact.
