Question 1

What are the key specifications of this storm jib?

Accepted Answer

This is an 11m2 Stormjib, originally from a 34-foot vessel. It is made from good quality Dacron and features a 5mm luff tape. Its dimensions are: Luff 7.85m, Foot 3.7m, and Leech 5.9m. The sail was produced by NIINIRANTA sails.

Question 2

What material is this storm jib made from?

Accepted Answer

This storm jib is constructed from Dacron. Dacron is a strong woven polyester fabric known for its durability and resistance to UV degradation, making it a reliable choice for cruising sails.

Question 3

When should a storm jib be used?

Accepted Answer

A storm jib is specialized safety equipment designed for use in heavy weather conditions when standard headsails become overpowering and potentially unsafe. It should be deployed when wind speeds exceed the capacity of your heavy-weather jibs, typically above 30 knots sustained. Setting it proactively before conditions turn severe helps maintain control and steerage of the boat.

Question 4

What boat size is this 11m2 storm jib suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This 11m2 storm jib was originally used on a 34-footer. Generally, storm jibs are sized according to World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations, which limit the sail area to 5% of the foretriangle height squared. For reference, a 41-foot boat might use a storm jib around 11.6m2, while a 36-foot boat might use one around 7.4m2. Given its original application and area, this storm jib is generally suitable for monohulls in the range of approximately 34 to 40+ feet, depending on the vessel’s specific foretriangle dimensions and design.

Question 5

How should a Dacron storm jib be maintained?

Accepted Answer

Cleaning and Drying: After use, especially in saltwater, rinse the sail thoroughly with fresh water and allow it to dry completely to prevent mildew.
Storage: Store the dry sail in a sail bag, away from direct UV sunlight and excessive heat (Dacron can deform at temperatures above 160°F or 71°C). Rolling the sail is preferable to folding to avoid damaging the fibers and finish.
Inspection: Regularly inspect the sail for any signs of wear, chafe, or damage to the stitching, attachment points, and grommets.
Mildew Treatment: For mildew on Dacron sails, a heavily diluted solution of household bleach (3-5% bleach to water) can be used, followed by a thorough rinse and drying.

Question 6

What is the purpose of a storm jib?

Accepted Answer

The primary purpose of a storm jib is to provide a small, robust headsail that allows a sailboat to maintain control, balance, and forward momentum in severe weather conditions. When winds are too strong for regular sails, a storm jib reduces the sail area and the center of effort, which helps minimize heeling and improves steering. It is considered an essential piece of safety equipment for both cruising and racing, ensuring the vessel can be managed effectively when conditions deteriorate.
