Question 1

What is this 103m² Furling Gennaker and how does it differ from a traditional gennaker?

Accepted Answer

A gennaker is an asymmetrical spinnaker, a downwind sail designed to be flown without a spinnaker pole. This particular sail is a furling gennaker, specifically an Elvstrom Furlstrom, which integrates a furling system for easier handling. Unlike traditional gennakers that are typically hoisted and doused manually or with a dousing sock, a furling gennaker often uses a top-down furling mechanism. This system wraps the sail around an anti-torsion cable, starting from the head and moving downwards, allowing for deployment and retrieval from the cockpit.

Question 2

What are the specific dimensions of this gennaker?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom Sails gennaker has the following key dimensions:

Sail Area: 103 square meters
Luff (leading edge): 17.15 meters
Foot (bottom edge): 10.53 meters
Leech (trailing edge): 15.57 meters

It was produced by Elvstrom Sails.

Question 3

Which boats would this gennaker be suitable for, given its size?

Accepted Answer

This new 103m² furling gennaker was originally intended for a Boreal 48. Boreal yachts are recognized as robust, all-weather cruising vessels, commonly built with aluminum hulls, and typically range from 44 to 78 feet in length. The Boreal 48 is a monohull sailing yacht, generally around 14.32m to 15.29m (approximately 47-50 feet) in length. Gennaker sizing primarily depends on the boat’s luff length, measured from the tack to the halyard exit at the masthead. A general guideline suggests subtracting about 20 cm from this measurement for optimal fit. A 103m² gennaker is suitable for various cruising yachts that can benefit from enhanced downwind performance, with sails in the 80-130m² range often considered for boats approximately 40-50 feet.

Question 4

What are the advantages of using a furling gennaker like the Elvstrom Furlstrom?

Accepted Answer

Using a furling gennaker such as the Elvstrom Furlstrom offers several advantages:

Simplified Handling: It enables easy deployment and retrieval directly from the cockpit, making it a practical choice for shorthanded crews or cruising sailors.
Convenience: The sail can be hoisted once and left furled on the bowsprit or bow, ready for immediate use, similar to a genoa. This reduces the need for complex foredeck maneuvers often associated with traditional spinnakers.
Performance: The Elvstrom Furlstrom is known for combining performance comparable to a gennaker with the straightforward handling of a genoa. It provides a notable increase in speed in light to moderate downwind conditions.
Enhanced Safety: The top-down furling mechanism ensures a secure and tidy furl, which contributes to the sail’s protection and safer handling, particularly in shifting wind conditions. It also minimizes the necessity for crew members to be on the foredeck during sail operations.

Question 5

How should I care for and maintain this new Elvstrom gennaker?

Accepted Answer

Proper care and maintenance are important for extending the lifespan of your gennaker:

Always ensure the gennaker is clean and completely dry before furling or storing to prevent the growth of mildew and material degradation.
Regularly inspect the sail for any indications of wear, such as chafing, loose stitching, or damage from ultraviolet (UV) exposure.
When furled, any integrated sun cover, a feature often found on Furlstrom designs, helps protect the sail from UV radiation. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh UV rays when the sail is not in active use.
If cleaning is necessary, use fresh water and a mild soap solution, then rinse thoroughly and allow the sail to dry completely in the shade.
For extended storage periods, keep the sail in its bag in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated environment.

Question 6

Why is a new sail like this available through Resail?

Accepted Answer

Resail is dedicated to extending the lifecycle of high-quality sails, promoting sustainable sailing by reducing waste and environmental impact. While our primary focus is on providing proven used sails, the availability of a new sail, such as this 103m² Elvstrom Furlstrom, aligns with our commitment to offering valuable sailing equipment to cruisers and club racers. It presents a direct alternative to acquiring a new sail through conventional channels, supporting our ethos of making quality sails accessible. This particular sail, originally specified for a Boreal 48, may be available due to a change in the original boat’s requirements or as a surplus from the manufacturer, creating an opportunity for another sailor to benefit from its performance and convenience.
