Question 1

What is a Code-O Cable Free sail?

Accepted Answer

A Code-O Cable Free sail is an advanced type of Code Zero sail that eliminates the traditional anti-torsion cable in the luff. Instead, the luff itself is engineered with high-density fibers or membrane constructions (like Elvstrom’s EPEX) to carry the load from tack to head. This design allows for a positive luff curve, which helps the sail project further to windward and achieve wider sailing angles compared to a conventional cabled Code Zero.

Question 2

What is the condition of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail is in ‘As New’ condition, having been used only once.

Question 3

What are the dimensions of this sail?

Accepted Answer

Sail Area: 108m²
Luff: 17.93m
Foot: 9.79m
Leech: 16m

Question 4

What type of boat is this sail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This 108m² Code-O Cable Free sail was originally designed for a HYD Class 40 sailboat. Class 40s are monohull yachts typically used for short-handed offshore and coastal racing, with a maximum length of 12.19m (40ft). This sail is generally suitable for similar performance-oriented yachts, including cruisers and club racers, especially modern boats with non-overlapping headsails, looking for a versatile sail for light to medium wind conditions and open wind courses.

Question 5

Who manufactured this sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail was produced by Elvstrom Sails, a well-known sailmaker.

Question 6

What are the benefits of a cable-free Code-O sail?

Accepted Answer

The cable-free design offers several advantages:

Wider Sailing Angles: Allows for a broader range of apparent wind angles, enabling deeper sailing than traditional Code Zeros.
Improved Performance: A straighter luff and more positive luff projection enhance the sail’s flying shape and power.
Easier Handling: Lighter weight and the ability for the furled sail to bend make it simpler to furl, unfurl, store, and move on and off the foredeck.
Reduced Loads: Requires significantly less halyard tension, which can reduce stress on the mast, rigging, and associated hardware.
Versatility: Can cover a wider range of wind conditions, potentially reducing the need for frequent sail changes.

Question 7

How can I determine if this sail will fit my boat?

Accepted Answer

To assess fit, compare the sail’s luff, foot, and leech dimensions against your boat’s specific measurements and sail plan. Consider the boat’s type and intended use; this sail was designed for a 40-foot offshore racing monohull. For precise fitment advice, it is recommended to consult with a professional sailmaker who can evaluate your boat’s rigging and sail inventory.
