Question 2

What is Dacron sailcloth and what are its benefits for a mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Dacron, also known as woven polyester, is a traditional and widely used sailcloth material. It is recognized for its durability, affordability, and reliable performance. Key benefits include:

UV Resistance: Dacron offers good resistance to ultraviolet degradation, which is crucial for sails exposed to sun.
Durability: It is highly resistant to chafe, mildew, and mold, and absorbs minimal water, making it suitable for long-term marine use.
Shape Retention: While it stretches more than some high-tech materials, Dacron provides good stretch resistance, helping to maintain the sail’s designed shape and efficiency over time.
Ease of Maintenance: Dacron sails are generally easy to repair and maintain, with small tears often fixable with simple stitching.

Question 3

How can I determine if this mainsail will fit my boat?

Accepted Answer

To confirm if this mainsail fits your boat, you should measure your boat’s rig. The critical dimensions to compare are the Luff (6.8m), Foot (3.1m), and Leech (7.45m). You will need to measure the maximum hoist length for the luff, the maximum length along the boom for the foot, and the corresponding leech length. Ensure your mast track is compatible with an 8mm bolt rope.

Question 4

What does 'Used' condition imply for this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

As a marketplace for used sails, Resail offers sails that have had a previous life but are still suitable for continued use. A ‘Used’ condition mainsail means it has been inspected and is deemed functional for cruising or club racing. Our aim is to extend the lifecycle of sails, providing a sustainable option without compromising on performance or trust for their intended application.

Question 5

What type of sailing is this Dacron mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

Dacron mainsails are a versatile choice, well-suited for a range of sailing activities. This mainsail is ideal for:

Coastal and Offshore Cruising: Providing reliability and ease of handling for extended voyages.
Club Racing: Offering consistent performance for competitive sailors.
Training and Recreational Sailing: Its forgiving nature and durability make it an excellent option for general sailing.

Question 6

How should I care for this Dacron mainsail to ensure its longevity?

Accepted Answer

Proper care can significantly extend the life of your Dacron mainsail:

Minimize UV Exposure: Keep the sail covered when not in use to protect it from harsh sunlight.
Avoid Flogging and Chafe: Reduce instances where the sail flaps excessively or rubs against rigging, spreaders, or other parts of the boat.
Keep it Dry: Always pack or store the sail dry to prevent mildew and mold growth.
Regular Inspection: Periodically check for worn stitches, small tears, or damaged hardware, especially at batten pockets and luff attachments. Small damages can often be repaired with self-adhesive Dacron patches or simple stitching.
