Question 1

What type of mainsail is this?

Accepted Answer

This is a new laminate in-mast furling mainsail produced by North Sails. It features a 6mm luff tape and was originally designed for an Oyster 72.

Question 2

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The mainsail has a luff of 24.8 meters, a foot of 9.2 meters, and a leech of 26 meters. The total sail area is 114 square meters.

Question 3

What are the advantages of a laminate in-mast furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Laminate sails are known for their superior shape retention, which contributes to better performance and more efficient sailing, even in varying wind conditions. They are also generally lighter than traditional Dacron sails, making them easier to handle, hoist, reef, and stow. In-mast furling systems offer convenience, allowing the sail to be deployed and stowed quickly from the cockpit, which enhances safety and ease of use for cruising.

Question 4

Which boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally designed for an Oyster 72. While it is a custom fit for that model, its dimensions (114m² sail area, 24.8m luff, 9.2m foot, 26m leech) may make it suitable for other yachts with comparable mast, boom, and furling system specifications. It is recommended to compare these dimensions with your yacht’s specific requirements.

Question 5

What does the 6mm luff tape mean for compatibility?

Accepted Answer

The 6mm luff tape is designed to slide into the groove of a roller furling system. It is crucial that the luff tape diameter matches the specific groove size of your in-mast furler to ensure smooth operation and prevent jamming or damage to the sail. While 6mm is a common size, it is advisable to verify your furler’s specifications, as groove sizes can vary by brand, model, and production year.

Question 6

How should I care for this laminate mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maintain a laminate mainsail, it is important to protect it from prolonged UV exposure by keeping it covered when not in use. After sailing, rinse the sail with fresh water to remove salt, and ensure it is completely dry before furling or storing to prevent mildew and potential delamination. Avoid harsh scrubbing or using bleach or solvents, as these can damage the laminate material. When furling, ease the outhaul tension to avoid stretching the foot. Regular inspection for chafe and minor damage is also recommended.
