Question 1

What is Dacron and why is it used for this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Dacron is a woven polyester fabric, widely recognized for its durability, UV resistance, and reliability in sailing. It is a stable material that resists UV damage, making it suitable for long-term use, particularly for recreational cruising and casual racing. Dacron sails are known for their stretch resistance, which helps maintain sail shape and efficiency over time, and they are generally easier to repair and maintain compared to more modern materials.

Question 2

What do "2 reefs" and "1 full/3 partial battens" signify?

Accepted Answer

2 Reefs: This indicates the mainsail has two points at which its area can be reduced. Reefing is the practice of making a sail smaller to maintain boat stability and control in stronger winds, enhancing safety and protecting equipment. Each reef point allows a portion of the sail to be lowered and secured, effectively reducing the sail area.
1 Full/3 Partial Battens: Battens are rigid strips inserted into pockets in the sail to help maintain its shape, particularly the ‘roach’ (the curved part of the leech). A full batten extends from the luff to the leech, providing superior shape retention and helping to reduce flogging. Partial battens extend only partway from the leech towards the luff. This combination offers a balance, supporting the sail’s shape while potentially making it easier to raise, lower, and stow compared to a fully battened sail.

Question 3

What are the exact dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The dimensions for this mainsail are:

Sail Area: 13.5 m²
Luff: 8 m
Foot: 3 m
Leech: 8.6 m

Question 4

How can I determine if this mainsail is suitable for my sailboat?

Accepted Answer

To assess suitability, compare the provided dimensions (Luff: 8m, Foot: 3m, Leech: 8.6m, Sail Area: 13.5m²) with your boat’s specific mast and boom measurements. This mainsail was originally used on a vdStadt Bries (8m), which can serve as a reference for similar boat sizes and rigging types. It is important to ensure the luff, foot, and leech dimensions align with your mast height, boom length, and mast track system.

Question 5

What is the condition of this used mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This Dacron Mainsail is described as being of good quality and little used. Resail focuses on extending the lifecycle of proven sails, ensuring they are suitable for cruisers and club racers.

Question 6

Who is the producer of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was produced by Van de Werf.

Question 7

What are the recommended care instructions for a Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maximize the lifespan and performance of your Dacron mainsail:

Rinse: Regularly hose down the sail with fresh water to remove salt and dirt, which can be abrasive and corrosive.
Dry: Ensure the sail is thoroughly dry before folding and storing to prevent mildew growth.
Protect from UV: Keep the mainsail covered when not in use to protect it from ultraviolet light, which can degrade the fabric over time.
Avoid Flogging: Minimize the amount of time the sail is flapping or ‘flogging’ in the wind, as this can weaken the sailcloth and distort its shape. Raise and drop sails quickly, and keep leech lines tight enough to prevent fluttering.
Clean Mildew: For Dacron sails, a diluted solution of household bleach (e.g., 25% bleach to 75% water) can be used for mildew, followed by a thorough rinse with fresh water. Mild soap and water are suitable for general cleaning.
