Question 1

What is an Asymmetric Spinnaker?

Accepted Answer

An asymmetric spinnaker, also known as a gennaker, is a downwind sail characterized by its triangular, non-symmetrical shape. Unlike a traditional symmetric spinnaker, it does not require a spinnaker pole and is typically tacked to the bow or a bowsprit. This design makes it generally easier to handle and ideal for sailing at broad reaching angles, typically between 90 and 165 degrees apparent wind angle.

Question 2

What are the dimensions of this spinnaker?

Accepted Answer

This asymmetric spinnaker has the following dimensions:

Sail Area: 144 m²
Luff: 19.11 m
Foot: 8.9 m
Leech: 17.08 m

Question 3

What type of boat is this spinnaker suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This new 144m² asymmetric spinnaker was originally designed for a Dragonfly 36 Performance trimaran. The Dragonfly 36 Performance model is known to accommodate spinnakers around 145 m². Asymmetric spinnakers are generally well-suited for cruising and short-handed sailing due to their easier handling compared to symmetric spinnakers. Multihulls like the Dragonfly 36 often benefit from asymmetric spinnakers for downwind performance.

Question 4

Who manufactured this spinnaker?

Accepted Answer

This asymmetric spinnaker was manufactured by Elvstrom Sails. Elvstrom Sails is a well-established sailmaker known for producing various types of sails, including symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers.

Question 5

What condition is this spinnaker in?

Accepted Answer

This spinnaker is in new condition.

Question 6

How should I maintain an asymmetric spinnaker?

Accepted Answer

Proper maintenance helps extend the life of your spinnaker. It should be dry and free from dirt or salt before storage. If the sail gets wet with saltwater, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water and allow it to dry completely. While stuffing it into a bag is common, flaking and rolling the sail properly before storage can help maintain its shape and fabric integrity over time.
