Sail Area: 15.7 m²

Question 2

What is North Sails 3Di NorDac material?

Accepted Answer

North Sails 3Di NorDac is a revolutionary cruising sail material made from 100% polyester fiber. Unlike traditional woven sails, 3Di NorDac sails are created using North’s patented 3Di process, where yarn fibers are spread into individual filaments, pre-impregnated with thermoset resin, and laid into ultra-thin tapes. These tapes are then thermoformed on 3D adjustable molds into the sail’s specific flying shape, resulting in a seamless, one-piece sail. This construction provides properties of true composite structures, offering high durability, toughness, resistance to UV, flex, and abrasion, while maintaining excellent shape holding.

Question 3

What type of boat is this J-30 OD Jib suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This jib is specifically designed for a J-30 One-Design (OD) sailboat. The J/30 is a popular racer/cruiser keelboat known for balancing comfort for coastal cruising with competitive racing performance. The original J/30 jib area is listed as 196 sq ft (approximately 18.2 m²), while this sail is 15.7 m². This suggests it might be a working jib or a smaller headsail for the J-30, suitable for various wind conditions.

Question 4

How does a furling jib work?

Accepted Answer

A furling jib allows the sail to be rolled up or unrolled around a forestay from the cockpit, eliminating the need to go to the foredeck to change or stow the sail. The sail’s luff is typically attached to a rotating foil or wire, which is then connected to a drum at the base. A furling line wrapped around this drum allows the sail to be deployed or retracted by pulling the line. This system provides convenience for adjusting sail area (reefing) or stowing the sail completely, enhancing safety and ease of handling, especially in changing wind conditions.

Question 5

How should I care for and maintain a 3Di NorDac sail?

Accepted Answer

To ensure the longevity of your North Sails 3Di NorDac sail:

Avoid Flogging: Minimize prolonged flogging or leech flutter, which can degrade sail performance.
UV Protection: Protect your sail from the sun when not in use, as UV exposure can shorten its life.
Proper Tension: Adjust your leech line to eliminate flutter without over-tensioning it.
Cleaning: For specific cleaning recommendations, it is advisable to consult a North Sails certified sail care facility.
Repairs: 3Di NorDac sails can often be repaired using adhesive patches, making dockside repairs possible.

Question 6

What is the warranty for this new North Sails jib?

Accepted Answer

North Sails typically offers a strong warranty against defects due to poor workmanship or defective materials for a minimum period of 12 months from the date of delivery for new sails. It is important to note that damage related to misuse or mistreatment is generally not covered by the warranty. For specific details regarding coverage, consulting a North Sails representative is recommended.
