Question 1

What is a Code-O sail and its purpose?

Accepted Answer

A Code-O, often referred to as a Code Zero, is a specialized sail designed to bridge the performance gap between a boat’s jib or genoa and an asymmetric spinnaker. It is optimized for sailing in light to medium wind conditions and at close reaching angles, where a traditional genoa might be ineffective and a spinnaker cannot yet develop stable power. Code-O sails are particularly useful for yachts with non-overlapping headsails, providing significant additional sail area and power. They are valued by both cruisers and club racers for their ability to enhance performance and reduce reliance on engine power in lighter winds.

Question 2

What does "cable-free" mean for this Code-O sail?

Accepted Answer

“Cable-free” refers to a modern design where the sail’s luff (the leading edge) does not incorporate a traditional anti-torsion cable for furling. Instead, the structural loads are carried by integrated reinforcements within the sail itself, such as high-density fibers or unidirectional yarns. This technology offers several advantages:

Lighter Weight: Eliminates the weight of a heavy cable.
Improved Shape: Allows for a more positive luff curve, which can lead to wider sailing angles and enhanced power.
Easier Handling & Storage: The sail is more flexible without a stiff cable, making it simpler to furl, unfurl, and store in a bag.
Reduced Loads: Can be flown with less halyard tension compared to cabled Code Zeros, potentially reducing stress on rigging and mast.

Question 3

What is the condition of this 161m2 Code-O sail?

Accepted Answer

This 161m2 Code-O sail is in good used condition, retaining approximately 65% of its original lifespan. It was produced by Elvstrom Sails and was originally used on a Wauquiez 57. Resail focuses on providing high-quality, proven used sails to ensure continued performance and reliability.

Question 4

How can I determine if this sail is suitable for my yacht?

Accepted Answer

To assess suitability, compare your yacht’s measurements with the sail’s dimensions:

Sail Area: 161m2
Luff: 23.88m
Foot: 11.7m
Leech: 21.23m

Key measurements from your boat to consider include the maximum hoist for your spinnaker halyard (often referred to as the ‘I’ measurement) and the horizontal distance from your tack attachment point to the mast (the ‘J’ measurement). The sail’s tack position (whether from a bowsprit or deck) will also influence fit. Given it was originally for a Wauquiez 57, this provides a reference for the size of vessel it can accommodate. For precise fitting advice, please contact Resail directly with your boat’s specifications.

Question 5

What are the care recommendations for a used Code-O sail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends the life of any sail. For this used Code-O sail:

Cleaning: Rinse the sail thoroughly with fresh water after use, especially if exposed to salt, and allow it to dry completely to prevent mildew and salt crystal abrasion.
Storage: Always store the sail clean and dry. It is preferable to roll the sail rather than fold it sharply to avoid damaging the fibers. Store it in a sail bag, away from direct UV sunlight and excessive heat, and in a well-ventilated area to protect against environmental degradation and pests.
Inspection & Repair: Regularly inspect the sail for any signs of wear, such as worn stitching, small tears, or chafe. Addressing minor damage promptly with a sailmaker can prevent more extensive issues and prolong the sail’s usability.
Usage: Avoid prolonged flogging of the sail, as this can accelerate wear. Ensure proper trim to maintain its shape and performance.

Question 6

Why choose a used sail from Resail?

Accepted Answer

Choosing a used sail from Resail supports sustainable sailing practices by giving proven sails a valuable second life. This approach reduces waste and the environmental impact associated with sail manufacturing. Resail offers high-quality, inspected used sails, providing an alternative to new sails without compromising on performance or trust. Our selection allows cruisers and club racers to equip their boats with reliable sails while contributing to a more environmentally conscious sailing community.
