Question 1

What type of sailboat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This 16m2 Dacron mainsail is specifically designed as a Fathead Mainsail for the J/70 class sailboat. The J/70 is a popular one-design fractional sloop known for competitive racing. Fathead mainsails, common in modern designs like the J/70, offer increased sail area and improved aerodynamic performance, particularly downwind and reaching, by extending the roach of the sail with a wider head.

Question 2

What are the key characteristics of a Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Dacron, also known as woven polyester, is a widely used sailcloth known for its durability, strength, and balance of performance and cost. It offers good shape retention, high abrasion resistance, and fair UV resistance. Dacron sails are forgiving, resistant to mildew, and can be easily repaired. They are a reliable choice for both cruising and club racing due to their longevity and robustness.

Question 3

What are the exact dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail has the following dimensions:

Sail Area: 16 m²
Luff: 7.97 m
Foot: 2.84 m
Leech: 8.32 m

Question 4

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This specific 16m2 Dacron J-70 Fathead Mainsail is new. While Resail specializes in providing high-quality used sails with a second life, this item is offered in new condition from the producer.

Question 5

How should I care for and maintain this Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends a sail’s life. For a Dacron mainsail:

Rinse: Hose down with fresh water after use to remove salt and dirt, which can be abrasive.
Dry: Ensure the sail is completely dry before folding and storing to prevent mildew.
Avoid Flogging & Chafe: Minimize flapping in the wind and protect the sail from rubbing against rigging or boat parts.
UV Protection: Store the sail out of direct sunlight when not in use, as UV radiation degrades sailcloth over time.
Storage: Fold or roll the sail to avoid sharp creases, and store it in a well-ventilated, clean environment, ideally in a sail bag.
Cleaning: For stubborn dirt or mildew, use a mild soap solution. A heavily diluted bleach solution can be used for mildew on Dacron, ensuring thorough rinsing afterwards.

Question 6

What is the expected lifespan of a Dacron sail?

Accepted Answer

The lifespan of a Dacron sail typically ranges from 10 to 15 years for cruising sails, though this can vary significantly based on factors such as usage intensity, UV exposure, and maintenance. Racing sails often have a shorter performance life due to the demand for optimal shape. Regular inspection and proper care, including protection from UV light and minimizing flogging, can help maximize a sail’s structural integrity and shape retention.

Question 7

Who is Elvstrom Sails, the producer of this mainsail?
