Question 1

What is a furling genoa and its benefits?

Accepted Answer

A furling genoa is a type of headsail designed to be rolled around the forestay, allowing for easy deployment, reefing, and storage directly from the cockpit. This offers convenience and flexibility, making it simpler to manage sail area in varying wind conditions without needing to go to the foredeck.

Question 2

What is the purpose of the UV strip and foam luff on this sail?

Accepted Answer

The grey UV strip is a sacrificial layer sewn onto the leech and foot of the sail. Its primary function is to protect the sailcloth and stitching from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation when the sail is furled, thereby extending the sail’s lifespan. The foam luff, or luff pad, is integrated into the leading edge of the sail to help maintain a more effective sail shape when the genoa is partially reefed. It adds thickness to the luff, preventing the sail from becoming too baggy and inefficient when sailing in stronger winds.

Question 3

What are the dimensions and sail area of this genoa?

Accepted Answer

This furling genoa has a sail area of 16 square meters. Its specific dimensions are:

Luff: 8.7 meters
Foot: 4 meters
Leech: 8 meters

Question 4

What condition is this furling genoa in?

Accepted Answer

This furling genoa is described as “As New.” It has been used a few times and is in excellent condition, ready for its next use.

Question 5

What type of boat is this genoa suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This genoa was originally designed for an 8-9 meter (approximately 26-30 foot) sloop. It is generally suitable for cruisers and club racers.

Question 6

What is the luff tape size for this genoa?

Accepted Answer
