Question 1

What is a Tanbark Dacron Genoa?

Accepted Answer

This is a Genoa sail made from Tanbark colored Dacron fabric. A Genoa is a large jib or foresail that overlaps the mast, designed to increase a sailboat’s speed in light to moderate winds. It is commonly used on single-masted sloops and twin-masted vessels.
Dacron is a widely used woven polyester sailcloth known for its durability, affordability, and good UV resistance, making it a popular choice for cruising and recreational sailing.
The ‘Tanbark’ color, a distinctive reddish-brown, historically came from soaking sailcloth in tannin-rich tree bark solutions to improve its resistance to UV rays, mildew, and rot. Modern Tanbark Dacron sails offer this classic aesthetic combined with the benefits of contemporary sailcloth technology.

Question 2

What are the dimensions of this Genoa?

Accepted Answer

The dimensions of this 17m2 Tanbark Genoa are:

Sail Area: 17 square meters
Luff: 9 meters
Foot: 4.2 meters
Leech: 8.2 meters

Question 3

What is the condition of the hanks on this sail?

Accepted Answer

This Genoa is equipped with bronze hanks. While they show some corrosion, they are noted to be well-functioning.

Question 4

What type of boat is this 17m2 Genoa suitable for?

Accepted Answer

Given its size of 17m2 and origin from a ’10m classic’ yacht, this Genoa is generally suitable for classic yachts around 10 meters (approximately 33 feet) in length. A 17m2 Genoa would typically function as a substantial headsail, providing good drive in various wind conditions for boats of this size.

Question 5

How should I maintain a used Dacron sail?

Accepted Answer

Proper maintenance extends the life of a used Dacron sail:

Rinsing: Rinse sails thoroughly with fresh water after use, especially in saltwater, to remove salt and dirt.
Drying: Ensure the sail is completely dry before folding and storing to prevent mildew growth.
Folding & Storage: Fold or roll sails to avoid sharp, permanent creases. Store them in a well-ventilated, dry location, away from direct sunlight.
UV Protection: Minimize prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when not in use, as UV rays can degrade sailcloth over time. Use a sail cover if the sail is left on the boom or furled.
Cleaning Stains: For general dirt, use mild soap and water. Diluted household bleach can be used on Dacron for mildew, but rinse thoroughly. Acetone can help with oil, grease, or rust stains. Avoid harsh chemicals on non-Dacron materials.
Avoid Flogging: Minimize unnecessary flogging (flapping) of sails, as this can accelerate wear and tear.

Question 6

What are the advantages of a Tanbark sail?

Accepted Answer

Tanbark sails offer several advantages:

Aesthetic Appeal: They provide a traditional, classic look that complements many vintage and classic yachts.
Durability & Resistance: Historically, the tanning process enhanced resistance to UV rays, mildew, and mold. Modern Tanbark Dacron sails maintain good durability and UV resistance.
Visibility: Tanbark sails are often more visible in foggy or hazy conditions compared to white sails.
Reduced Glare: The darker color can reduce sun glare, making it easier on the eyes in bright conditions.
Stain Hiding: Their color helps to mask dirt and stains, making them appear cleaner for longer.
