Question 1

What is Elvstrom EPEX technology?

Accepted Answer

EPEX is Elvstrøm Sails’ patented membrane technology, representing a significant advancement in sail construction. This technology involves a 100% custom design where each fiber is precisely placed according to a load path, ensuring optimal distribution of fibers across the entire sail. This results in exceptional shape stability and performance. The components are bonded under an extreme and constant vacuum, which evacuates all air and compresses the membrane layers. EPEX is a versatile concept that can incorporate various high-performance fibers, including Technora, Vectran, and carbon.

Question 2

What are the characteristics of Technora Grey sailcloth?

Accepted Answer

Technora is a high-performance para-aramid fiber known for its durability and strength. It offers a high strength-to-weight ratio, high modulus, and excellent dimensional stability with low creep. Technora also provides good abrasion and fatigue resistance, high cut resistance, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. The ‘Grey’ aspect, often referring to Technora black fibers, enhances UV resistance and offers improved folding properties compared to some other aramid fibers. On a weight-for-weight basis, Technora yarns are significantly stronger than polyester and polyamide yarns, and even stronger than steel.

Question 3

What are the exact dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail has the following dimensions:

Sail Area: 17 m²
Luff: 9.28 meters
Foot: 3.38 meters
Leech: 9.96 meters

Question 4

What type of boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This 17m² Technora Grey EPEX Mainsail was originally designed for an Arpege sailboat. Dufour Arpege models typically have mainsail areas ranging from approximately 16.42 m² to 19.17 m², with luff lengths (P) around 9.49m to 9.51m and foot lengths (E) around 3.09m to 3.60m. The dimensions of this sail (17m² area, 9.28m luff, 3.38m foot) align closely with these specifications, suggesting it is well-suited for an Arpege or similar sized masthead sloop with comparable rig measurements.

Question 5

How should I care for this EPEX Technora mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maintain the performance and longevity of your EPEX Technora mainsail, proper care is essential. While Technora offers good UV and abrasion resistance, general sail care practices should be followed:

Rinse the sail with fresh water after use, especially after sailing in saltwater, and ensure it is thoroughly dry before storage to prevent mildew.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when not in use by covering the sail or storing it below deck.
Fold or roll the sail carefully to minimize creasing, which can stress the material.
Inspect the sail regularly for any signs of wear, damage, or loose stitching, and address minor issues promptly to prevent them from worsening.
Consider professional cleaning and inspection periodically to extend the sail’s lifespan.

Question 6

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This 17m2 Technora Grey EPEX Mainsail is in New condition.
