Question 1

What is a furling genoa and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

A genoa is a large foresail that overlaps the mast, providing significant drive. A furling genoa is specifically designed to be rolled or ‘furled’ around the forestay, allowing sailors to easily adjust the sail area from the cockpit. This mechanism enhances convenience and safety, particularly for short-handed sailing or when navigating changing wind conditions. Instead of lowering, folding, and bagging the sail, it can simply be rolled around the headstay by pulling on the furling line.

Question 2

What are the advantages of Dacron sailcloth for this genoa?

Accepted Answer

Dacron, also known as woven polyester, is a widely recognized and reliable material for sailmaking, especially for cruising and recreational use. Its key advantages include exceptional durability, strong resistance to stretching, and excellent shape retention, which are crucial for maintaining sail efficiency over time. Dacron also offers good UV resistance, is resistant to mildew and mold, absorbs minimal water, and is generally easier to repair compared to some more modern materials. These properties make it a robust and long-lasting choice for a furling genoa.

Question 3

What do 'RF' and 'UV' signify in the product description?

Accepted Answer

In the context of this genoa, ‘RF’ stands for Roller Furling, indicating that the sail is specifically designed for use with a roller furling system on your boat’s forestay. ‘UV’ refers to the Ultraviolet protection strip. This is a durable fabric, in this case, a Burgundy patch, sewn onto the leech and foot of the sail. Its purpose is to protect the rolled-up sail from sun damage when it is stowed on the forestay, significantly extending the sail’s lifespan by preventing the degradation of fibers and stitching caused by UV radiation.

Question 4

How can I determine if this 18m2 Furling Genoa will fit my sailboat?

Accepted Answer

To ensure this genoa is suitable for your vessel, you should compare its dimensions with the required measurements for your boat’s rig. This sail has a luff of 8.6 meters, a foot of 4.5 meters, and a leech of 8.2 meters. It was originally designed for a 25-footer. We recommend consulting your boat’s specific sail plan, or a qualified rigger or sailmaker, to confirm compatibility with your forestay length and overall sail configuration.

Question 5

What is the purpose of the foam in the luff of this furling genoa?

Accepted Answer

The foam in the luff (leading edge) of this furling genoa is a crucial feature designed to help the sail maintain a more efficient shape when it is partially furled or reefed. Without it, the middle section of the sail tends to become too full or ‘baggy’ as it’s rolled in, leading to a less aerodynamic shape and reduced performance. The foam helps to distribute the sail fabric evenly along the luff, ensuring a smoother, more effective shape across a wider range of wind conditions, even when the sail area is reduced.

Question 6

What are the specific dimensions of this North Sails genoa?

Accepted Answer

This new North Sails Furling Genoa has the following specific dimensions:

Sail Area: 18 square meters
Luff: 8.6 meters
Foot: 4.5 meters
Leech: 8.2 meters

These measurements are essential for determining the sail’s suitability for your boat’s rig.
