Leech: 10.21 meters

Question 2

What material is this mainsail made from, and what are its characteristics?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is made from Dacron, a woven polyester fabric. Dacron has been a standard material in sailmaking for decades due to its durability, UV resistance, and ease of handling. It offers good stretch resistance to maintain sail shape over time and is generally easy to repair. This makes it a dependable choice for cruising and club racing sails.

Question 3

What features does this mainsail include?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail includes 2 reef points, which allow you to reduce the sail area in stronger winds for improved boat control and stability. It is also designed to accommodate 4 partial battens.

Question 4

Is this mainsail specifically for a Bombay Clipper 31?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally for a Bombay Clipper 31. The sail area of 19.5m² (approximately 209.9 sq ft) is consistent with reported mainsail dimensions for this vessel, which can be around 215.99 sq ft (20.06 m²). While it was designed for this specific boat, its dimensions may be suitable for other vessels with comparable mast and boom measurements.

Question 5

What care and maintenance does a Dacron mainsail require?

Accepted Answer

Dacron sails are known for being relatively low-maintenance. Regular rinsing with fresh water after use helps remove salt and prevents mildew. For more thorough cleaning, it is recommended to wash Dacron sails every two to three years, or as needed, to remove stains, mold, and mildew. This cleaning process typically involves submerging the sail in a cleaning solution, followed by rinsing and proper drying.

Question 6

Are battens included with this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

No, the 4 partial battens are not included with this mainsail.
