Question 1

What are the specific dimensions of this Genoa?

Accepted Answer

This Genoa has a sail area of 21.5m². Its luff measures 9 meters, the foot is 5.09 meters, and the leech is 8.5 meters.

Question 2

What are the characteristics and benefits of Dacron sailcloth?

Accepted Answer

Dacron is a woven polyester fabric, widely recognized as a standard material for sails due to its balance of affordability, durability, and ease of use. It is particularly well-suited for cruising and club racing sails. Key benefits include resistance to UV degradation and a forgiving nature in handling, making it a practical choice for many sailors. Dacron sailcloths are available in various weights and weaves, offering a good balance between longevity and performance.

Question 3

What are bronze hanks used for and what are their advantages?

Accepted Answer

Bronze hanks are used to attach the luff (leading edge) of the sail to the forestay of a sailboat. Their primary advantage is facilitating quick and easy attachment and detachment of the sail, which allows for rapid sail changes. Bronze hanks, such as those from Wichard, are also noted for being gentle on steel or stainless forestays and provide a durable attachment with secure, spring-loaded clamping.

Question 4

How can I determine if this 21.5m² Genoa is suitable for my sailboat?

Accepted Answer

A Genoa is a large headsail that overlaps the mainsail, designed to increase boat speed in light to moderate winds. This 21.5m² Genoa, with a luff of 9m, foot of 5.09m, and leech of 8.5m, is a common size that may be suitable for various sloops, yawls, or ketches. For example, a Hanse 315 often utilizes a genoa/jib of this approximate area. To confirm suitability for your specific vessel, compare these dimensions (Luff, Foot, Leech, and Sail Area) with your boat’s sail plan specifications and forestay length. Consulting a sailmaker or your boat’s designer is recommended for precise compatibility.

Question 5

What is the condition of this Genoa?

Accepted Answer

This Genoa is brand new. It is a new Dacron Genoa complete with bronze hanks.

Question 6

What maintenance is recommended for a Dacron Genoa?

Accepted Answer

To prolong the life of your Dacron Genoa, several maintenance practices are recommended:

Avoid Flogging: Minimize prolonged flapping of the sail, especially when motoring into the wind, as this can degrade performance. Trim sails promptly to keep them filled.
Adjust Leech Line: Properly adjust the leech line to eliminate flutter, but avoid over-tensioning.
Use Within Wind Ranges: Operate the sail within its designed wind ranges.
Limit UV Exposure: UV rays are damaging; limit the sail’s exposure to direct sunlight for extended periods.
Ease Halyard: When leaving the boat, ease the halyard tension to prevent permanent luff stretching.
Prevent Chafe: Avoid unnecessary contact between the sail and rigging or other sharp edges that could cause chafe or tears.
Regular Cleaning: Consider professional sail washing every two to three years, or as needed, to remove dirt, mold, and mildew. This process can also help identify any rotting stitching that requires repair.
Timely Repairs: Address any needed repairs before storing the sail for the off-season to ensure it remains fully functional.
