Question 1

What are the key specifications of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This is a new Dacron mainsail produced by North Sails. Its key dimensions are:

Sail Area: 24.66m²
Luff: 11.53m
Foot: 4.32m
Leech: 12.23m

Question 2

What does "New Dacron Mainsail" signify?

Accepted Answer

“New” indicates that the sail has not been previously used. Dacron is a brand name for woven polyester fiber, which has been a widely used sailcloth for cruising boats since the 1950s. It is known for its durability, resistance to UV degradation, fatigue, and abrasion, offering a good balance of performance and longevity for cruising and recreational sailing.

Question 3

What features does this mainsail include?

Accepted Answer

2 Reefs: This allows sailors to reduce the sail area in stronger winds, providing better control and safety by flattening the sail.
Full Batten (Battens not included): The sail is designed to accommodate full-length battens, which run from the leech to the luff. Full battens help maintain the sail’s aerodynamic shape, reduce flogging, and increase durability.
Batten Cars: These systems are designed to reduce friction in the mast track, making it easier to hoist, lower, and reef the mainsail, especially with full battens.
Loose Foot: The foot of the sail is only attached at the tack and clew, not along the entire length of the boom. This design offers greater flexibility in shaping the foot for finer control over sail shape and improved aerodynamic flow.

Question 4

Is this mainsail suitable only for a Freedom 30?

Accepted Answer

While this mainsail was originally made for a Freedom 30, it can be suitable for other sailboats. Compatibility depends on matching your boat’s specific mast, boom, and rigging dimensions to the sail’s luff (11.53m), foot (4.32m), and leech (12.23m) measurements. We recommend verifying your boat’s measurements for proper fit.

Question 5

Are battens included with the mainsail?

Accepted Answer

No, the battens are not included with this mainsail. It is designed for full-length battens, which would need to be sourced separately.

Question 6

How should I maintain this Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maximize the life and performance of your Dacron mainsail:

Clean Regularly: Rinse the sail with fresh water after use, especially if exposed to saltwater. For tougher stains, use mild detergent and a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid commercial washing machines and dryers.
Store Properly: Ensure the sail is dry before folding or rolling to prevent mildew. Store it in a sail bag or cover to protect it from prolonged UV exposure when not in use, as UV rays are a primary cause of sail degradation.
Minimize Flogging and Chafe: Avoid letting the sail flap excessively, as flogging quickly degrades cloth properties. Also, reduce chafe by ensuring the sail does not rub against rigging, spreaders, or other parts of the boat.
Inspect and Repair: Regularly check for broken stitches, worn areas, or damage to batten pockets and hardware. Address any repairs promptly to prevent further damage.
