Question 1

What is an EMS Furling Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

An EMS (Elvstrøm Mainsail System) Furling Mainsail is an in-mast furling mainsail featuring full continuous vertical battens. This design allows the sail to be easily furled into the mast for convenient storage and reefing from the cockpit. The vertical battens contribute to a more stable sail shape and improved performance compared to furling mainsails without battens.

Question 2

What are the benefits of vertical battens in a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Vertical battens in a furling mainsail offer several advantages. They provide support for the leech, allowing the sail to be designed with more roach, which means a larger and more aerodynamically efficient sail area. These battens also act as reefing points, helping the sail maintain a flatter, more efficient shape when reefed. This combination leads to enhanced performance and smoother furling operations.

Question 3

What is DCX Laminate sail material?

Accepted Answer

DCX Laminate is a high-performance cruising laminate material produced by Dimension-Polyant. It’s constructed with a core Polyester scrim, reinforced with a 9° X-Ply for increased support, and encased between two film layers. The outer surfaces feature taffetas for superior abrasion resistance. This material is engineered for durability, high shape stability, and resistance to UV and mildew, making it suitable for demanding sailing conditions.

Question 4

Is this sail suitable for a Hanse 348?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this 30m² Furling Mainsail was originally designed for a Hanse 348. The sail area of 30m² is consistent with an in-mast furling mainsail for this yacht model, which typically has a slightly smaller area than a conventional mainsail. To ensure a precise fit for your specific vessel, it is always recommended to compare the sail’s luff (12.92m), foot (4.4m), and leech (13.52m) dimensions with your boat’s measurements.

Question 5

How do I measure my boat to ensure this sail fits?

Accepted Answer

To ensure proper fit, it is advisable to physically measure your boat’s rig, as dimensions can vary. For a furling mainsail, key measurements include:

Luff (P): Measure from the top of the mast (where the mainsail halyard exits) down to the top of the boom (at the mast).
Foot (E): Measure along the boom from the mast to the furthest point the clew can reach.
Leech: While not a primary measurement for ordering, understanding the leech length in relation to your mast and boom is helpful.

Always use a steel tape measure and pull it tight. It’s also a good practice to measure on a calm day.

Question 6

How should I care for and maintain this laminate furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends the life of your laminate furling mainsail. Always rinse the sail with fresh water and dry it thoroughly before storage to prevent mildew. Avoid soaking or scrubbing; instead, gently hose off any dirt. When not in use, ensure the sail is secured and covered to protect it from UV exposure. To prevent stretching, ease the outhaul tension and halyard when leaving the boat. Avoid excessive flapping during sailing, and reef when appropriate to reduce wear.

Question 7

What is the condition of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This 30m² Furling Mainsail is in new condition. It has not been previously used.
