Question 1

What is a gennaker and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

A gennaker is an asymmetric specialty sail, designed to bridge the performance gap between a genoa and a spinnaker. Unlike a symmetrical spinnaker, it is not attached to the forestay, but its tack is fastened to the hull or a bowsprit. It is primarily used for downwind sailing, particularly on reaching courses, and is known for being easier to handle and less prone to collapsing than a traditional spinnaker.

Question 2

What are the key specifications of this gennaker?

Accepted Answer

Brand: North Sails
Material: Nylon
Color: White
Sail Area: 33 m²
Luff: 10.5 meters
Foot: 5.21 meters
Leech: 9.35 meters

Question 3

What type of sailing is this gennaker suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This gennaker is suitable for enhancing offwind performance for both cruisers and club racers. It performs well in light to moderate winds, typically ranging from 5 to 20 knots, and is ideal for downwind sailing, especially on reaching courses with apparent wind angles of 60° to 150°. Its design makes it a practical choice for sailors seeking improved downwind speed with straightforward handling.

Question 4

What is the condition of this gennaker?

Accepted Answer

This is a NEW gennaker by North Sails, meaning it has not been previously used. While Resail specializes in giving proven sails a second life, we also offer selected new sails to ensure a comprehensive range for sailors.

Question 5

How should I care for and maintain this nylon gennaker?

Accepted Answer

To maintain your nylon gennaker, always store it dry, clean, and free of salt in its sailbag. Avoid folding it along the same creases each time. After sailing, rinse the sail with fresh water to remove salt and hang it to dry thoroughly, out of direct sunlight, before storage. Nylon is susceptible to damage from chlorine, so never use bleach or products containing it. For cleaning, mild soap, Oxiclean, or a white vinegar solution can be used for soaking, followed by a thorough rinse. Minimize flogging (flapping) to preserve the sail’s strength and shape, and protect it from prolonged direct sunlight exposure during storage. Any small tears should be addressed by a sailmaker promptly.

Question 6

Does this gennaker come with any accessories?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this gennaker comes with a sail bag for convenient storage and transport.
