Question 1

What are the key dimensions and area of this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail has a sail area of 34 square meters (m2). Its specific dimensions are: Luff: 14.3 meters, Foot: 5.1 meters, and Leech: 14.67 meters.

Question 2

What does "X-Cut" refer to in the sail's construction?

Accepted Answer

“X-Cut,” or cross-cut, describes a sail layout where panels are horizontally arranged, running perpendicular to the leech of the sail. This construction method is known for being durable and cost-effective, typically using woven polyester (Dacron) with strong fill yarns. It is a time-tested method often favored for cruising sails due to its reliability and longevity.

Question 3

What is "Atlantic 8.38" as the sailcloth material?

Accepted Answer

Atlantic 8.38 refers to a specific type of sailcloth. “Atlantic” styles from Challenge Sailcloth are tightly woven fabrics made from 100% high tenacity fibers, engineered for durable cruising sails. The “8.38” likely indicates a specific weight or denier of the fabric, contributing to its robust characteristics. This material offers strength primarily through its weave rather than coatings and has a medium to firm feel.

Question 4

Which boat model is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally designed for a Hanse 388. While it has a “Hanse Class Mark” indicating its suitability for a Hanse yacht, its specific dimensions (34m2 sail area, 14.3m luff, 5.1m foot, 14.67m leech) should be compared with your boat’s rigging to ensure proper fit and performance. Standard mainsail areas for a Hanse 388 typically range from approximately 40.84 m² to 41.20 m².

Question 5

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is brand new. It has not been used previously.

Question 6

What are the advantages of a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

A furling mainsail offers convenience and ease of handling, particularly for short-handed sailing. It allows for simple reefing and stowing of the sail directly from the cockpit, eliminating the need to go forward on deck. This system contributes to safer sailing by reducing exposure to challenging conditions and simplifying sail management.
