Question 1

What are the key dimensions of this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail has the following key dimensions:

Sail Area: 34 m²
Luff (front edge): 14.5 meters
Leech (back edge): 4.55 meters

Question 2

What is the condition and manufacturer of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail is in New condition. It was produced by Elvstrom Sails, a manufacturer known for its extensive experience in sail design and development, including furling mainsails.

Question 3

What are the advantages of choosing a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Furling mainsails offer significant benefits for ease of handling and safety, particularly for short-handed crews or solo sailors. They allow for easy reefing and unfurling directly from the cockpit, eliminating the need to go on deck in varying conditions. Once furled, there is no need to flake the sail on the boom or use a cover, as it stows itself away, extending the sail’s lifespan by protecting it from UV exposure when not in use.

Question 4

Which boat is this sail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail was originally intended for a Sun Kiss sailboat. Specifically, the dimensions are very close to those of a Jeanneau Sun Kiss 45, which typically has a mainsail area of around 32.74 m² (352.39 sq ft), a luff (P) of approximately 14.42 m (47.30 ft), and a foot (E) of about 4.54 m (14.90 ft). While designed for a Sun Kiss, it may be suitable for other cruising yachts with similar mast and boom dimensions that can accommodate a 34 m² furling mainsail with a luff of 14.5 m and a leech of 4.55 m.

Question 5

How do "short battens" benefit this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail features short battens. Battens provide structure to the sail, supporting the roach (the curved area of the sail that extends beyond a straight line between the head and clew). Short battens help prevent leech flutter, maintain the sail’s designed shape under load, and contribute to its durability by reducing flogging. Elvstrom Sails’ designs often incorporate short intermediate battens to further strengthen the leech and ensure smooth furling operation.

Question 6

How can I verify if this sail will fit my boat?

Accepted Answer

To confirm compatibility, you should measure your boat’s mast and boom to determine the maximum allowable luff (P) and foot (E) dimensions. The luff is measured along the mast from the top of the boom to the highest point the mainsail can be hoisted, and the leech is measured from the after tip of the sail head to the clew. It is recommended to use a long fiberglass tape measure for accuracy. Ensure that your boat’s rig can accommodate a sail with a luff of 14.5 meters and a leech of 4.55 meters, and that your furling system is compatible with a mainsail of this type and size.
