Question 1

What type of sail is this and what are its key features?

Accepted Answer

This is a 36.1m2 Fullbatten Mainsail. Full-length battens extend across the entire width of the sail, from leech to luff. This design helps the sail maintain its intended shape, reduces flogging, and can extend the sail’s lifespan by protecting the leech. Fullbatten mainsails can also support a larger roach, which adds sail area, potentially improving performance in light winds.

Question 2

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail has a sail area of 36.1 square meters. Its luff (hoist) measures 13.3 meters, and its foot (bottom edge) measures 4.6 meters.

Question 3

Which boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally designed for a Cyclade 39.3. The Beneteau Cyclades 39.3 is a fractional sloop cruiser. The listed dimensions of 13.3m luff and 4.6m foot align with the typical ‘P’ and ‘E’ measurements for this boat model. While designed for this specific model, it is crucial to compare these dimensions against your boat’s exact rig measurements (P and E) to ensure proper fit and performance.

Question 4

What is the condition of this used mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Question 6

How should I maintain a fullbatten mainsail to ensure its longevity?

Accepted Answer

To extend the life of any sail, especially a used one, proper maintenance is key. Regularly rinse the sail with fresh water to remove salt and dirt, and ensure it is completely dry before storage to prevent mildew. Inspect the sail periodically for any signs of wear, particularly at the batten pockets, sliders, and along the leech, as full battens require attention to their hardware. Addressing small issues promptly can prevent larger problems.
