Question 1

What are the key specifications of this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This is a new furling mainsail with a sail area of 36.3 square meters. Its luff (forward edge) measures 13.85 meters, and its foot (bottom edge) is 5.09 meters. It also features short battens.

Question 2

What are the advantages of a furling mainsail with short battens?

Accepted Answer

A furling mainsail offers several benefits, including fast and controlled sail handling, reduced deck work, and enhanced safety in changing weather conditions. It also provides better sail protection and longevity, as the sail is stowed away from the elements. With a furling mainsail, reefing can often be managed without leaving the cockpit, making it ideal for short-handed sailing.
The inclusion of short battens helps prevent leech-flutter, maintaining better sail shape. Sails with short battens are generally easier to raise, reef, and lower compared to fully battened mainsails, and they are also simpler to stow.

Question 3

Which boat model was this sail originally designed for?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail was originally designed for a Hanse 385. The dimensions of this sail, with a luff of 13.85m and a foot of 5.09m, align closely with the typical mainsail specifications for a Hanse 385, which generally has a P (luff) around 14.00m-14.70m and an E (foot) around 4.30m-5.10m. The sail area of 36.3 m² also falls within the standard mainsail area for this model, which can range from approximately 35 m² to 44 m².

Question 4

How can I determine if this sail will fit my sailboat?

Accepted Answer

To ensure this sail fits your sailboat, you should accurately measure your boat’s current rig dimensions. Key measurements for a mainsail include the ‘P’ dimension (maximum hoist from the top of the boom to the highest point the halyard can reach on the mast) and the ‘E’ dimension (maximum foot length from the aft face of the mast to the end of the boom). Compare these measurements to the sail’s luff (13.85m) and foot (5.09m) dimensions.
It is always recommended to physically measure your boat, as rig sizes can vary even among the same make and model, and modifications by previous owners are possible.

Question 5

What is the condition of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail is in new condition. This means it has not been previously used and is in pristine, unused state, potentially as excess stock or from an unfulfilled order.

Question 6

Who is Elvstrom Sails, the manufacturer of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer
