Question 2

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is in an “As New” condition, having been used for only three months.

Question 3

Which boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail was originally designed for a Sun Odyssey 42DS. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 DS is a fractional sloop, built by Jeanneau to a design by Marc Lombard, with a length overall of 12.93m (42.42 ft). While specifically made for this model, it is crucial to verify the exact dimensions against your boat’s rigging to ensure proper fit and performance.

Question 4

What does 'EMS (vertical battens) Max Mainsail' signify?

Accepted Answer

The ‘EMS’ in Elvstrom EMS Max Mainsail stands for Elvstrom Mainsail System. This particular sail features continuous vertical battens, which are a significant design element for in-mast furling mainsails. These vertical battens allow for a larger sail area with a positive roach (the curve of the sail’s leech), enhancing performance compared to furling sails without battens. They also provide optimal support for the leech, whether the sail is fully deployed or reefed, and help in smooth furling and reefing operations by stretching the sail and preventing folds.

Question 5

Who manufactured this furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail was manufactured by Elvstrom Sails, a company known for its pioneering work in developing furling sail concepts, including those with vertical battens.

Question 6

How should I care for a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends the life of any sail. For a furling mainsail, key maintenance practices include:

Regular rinsing: Rinse your sail with fresh water to remove salt and dirt, and dry it thoroughly before furling to prevent mildew.
UV Protection: Limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight as UV rays can degrade sailcloth.
Smooth Operation: Always furl and unfurl the sail smoothly, ideally with the boat pointed head-to-wind (in irons) and with light tension on the outhaul/inhaul lines to prevent flogging and jamming.
Inspection: Periodically check for any small tears or signs of wear and address them promptly.
Professional Servicing: Consider professional inspection and servicing for the sail and furling system to ensure all components are in good working order.
