Question 3

What are the benefits of vertical battens in a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Vertical battens, particularly those with a carbon top, provide essential support for the sail’s leech, helping to maintain its optimal shape whether the sail is fully deployed or reefed. They also function as effective reefing points, which helps to flatten the sail and enhance its efficiency. This design contributes to a positive leech, leading to improved performance and smoother furling operations by minimizing folds.
