Question 1

What are the key specifications of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom mainsail has a sail area of 42.5m², with a luff length of 14.1m, a foot length of 4.97m, and a leech length of 14.55m. It is constructed from Horizontal Cut Dacron and features 3 reefing points and a Cunningham. Please note that the 5 full battens are not included with the sail.

Question 2

What does "Horizontal Cut Dacron" mean for performance and durability?

Accepted Answer

Dacron, a woven polyester, is widely recognized for its exceptional durability, longevity, resistance to UV degradation, and ability to withstand chafe, making it a reliable choice for both cruising and club racing. A horizontal (or cross-cut) design means the sail panels run parallel to each other and perpendicular to the leech. This construction effectively aligns the strongest yarns (fill-oriented) with the primary load paths along the leech, providing robust all-around strength and good value. While Dacron offers excellent longevity, it’s worth noting that polyester yarns can stretch over time, leading to a gradual loss of the sail’s original aerodynamic shape compared to sails made from higher-tech fibers.

Question 3

What is the condition of this mainsail, and what does "used" imply?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is designated as “Used.” Resail is dedicated to extending the lifecycle of proven sails, offering high-quality used options to cruisers and club racers. A used sail, while having seen prior use, has been evaluated to ensure it remains a functional and dependable component for your vessel. Any specific wear characteristics would be detailed in the product description and accompanying images.

Question 4

What are the benefits of having 3 reefs and 5 full battens?

Accepted Answer

3 Reefs: While most cruising mainsails typically feature two reefing points, the inclusion of a third reef significantly enhances your ability to manage sail area, particularly for offshore sailing or in anticipation of strong winds. This allows for a substantial reduction in sail area, promoting better control, stability, and comfort in challenging conditions. It is generally more practical to shake out an unneeded reef than to try and put one in when the weather deteriorates.
5 Full Battens: Full-length battens play a crucial role in maintaining the sail’s designed shape and significantly improve its overall durability by minimizing flogging – the violent snapping motion that can occur during hoisting, lowering, or reefing. They also facilitate easier stacking of the sail on the boom and allow for a larger roach (the curved area of the sail extending beyond a straight line from head to clew), which can contribute to increased sail area and power. Please remember that the battens themselves are not included with this mainsail.

Question 5

What is a Cunningham and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

A Cunningham is a control line used to apply downward tension to the luff (leading edge) of the mainsail. By tightening the Cunningham, you effectively pull the draft (the deepest point of the sail’s aerodynamic curve) forward. This adjustment is primarily used to flatten the sail and depower it in stronger wind conditions, or to fine-tune the sail’s shape for optimal performance and efficiency.

Question 6

How should I care for a used Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maximize the lifespan of your Dacron mainsail, it is recommended to rinse it thoroughly with fresh water after each use, especially if it has been exposed to salt spray. Ensure the sail is completely dry before storing to prevent mildew growth and corrosion of fittings. When not actively sailing, protect the sail from prolonged exposure to UV rays by using a sail cover if it’s stored on the boom. Regularly inspect the sail for any minor scuffs or small tears; these can often be addressed with self-adhesive Dacron patches. For more significant damage, seeking professional repair is advisable.

Question 7

Who is Elvstrom, the producer of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Elvstrom Sails is an internationally renowned sailmaker, established in 1954 by the legendary Olympic sailor Paul Elvstrøm. The company is recognized for its expertise in designing, engineering, and producing sails for a wide range of sailing purposes, from competitive racing to comfortable cruising. Elvstrom Dacron sails are generally considered to be of high quality, offering durability, ease of handling, and reliable performance for cruising yachts.
