Question 1

What is a furling jib and how does it function?

Accepted Answer

A furling jib is a type of headsail designed for easy handling. It rolls around a forestay or a dedicated furling rod, allowing sailors to deploy, reef (reduce sail area), or completely stow the sail from the cockpit. This system enhances safety and convenience, especially for short-handed crews, by eliminating the need to go to the foredeck to change or manage the sail.

Question 2

What are the specific dimensions of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This furling jib has the following dimensions:

Sail Area: 43 m²
Luff: 17.8 m
Foot: 5.5 m
Leech: 15.9 m

It was originally designed for an Atlantic Cat 48, with a perpendicular (Lp) measurement of 4.82 m.

Question 3

What does "vertical battens (not included)" mean for this sail?

Accepted Answer

Vertical battens are stiffeners inserted into pockets in the sail, running parallel to the luff. Their purpose is to improve the sail’s shape, allowing for a fuller leech (roach) and enhancing performance, particularly in non-overlapping jibs. The indication “not included” means that while the sail is designed to accommodate vertical battens, they are not supplied with this specific product and would need to be acquired separately if desired.

Question 4

What is the 5mm luff tape for, and is it compatible with all furling systems?

Accepted Answer

The 5mm luff tape is a rope sewn into the leading edge (luff) of the sail. This tape slides into a groove on your boat’s furling foil, providing a secure attachment point and allowing the sail to be smoothly rolled and unrolled.
While 5mm is a common luff tape size, compatibility depends on the specific furling system installed on your boat. Luff tapes typically range from 4mm to 7mm. It is important to verify that the 5mm tape fits the groove of your furler to ensure proper and safe operation. If the tape is too large, the sail may get stuck; if it’s too small, it could come out of the groove.

Question 5

Is this furling jib suitable for boats other than an Atlantic Cat 48?

Accepted Answer

This jib was originally designed for an Atlantic Cat 48. While it may be suitable for other vessels, careful comparison of the sail’s dimensions (luff, foot, leech, and sail area) against your boat’s specific rig measurements is essential. Boat owners often consult with a sailmaker or rigging specialist to determine if a sail with these dimensions is appropriate for their vessel’s mast, forestay, and furling system to ensure optimal fit and performance. An Atlantic Cat 48 is a catamaran, and its sail plan may differ from monohulls or other catamaran designs.

Question 6

What is the condition of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This 43m2 Furling Jib is in new condition. This means it has not been previously used and is ready for its first life on the water.

Question 7

Who manufactured this jib?

Accepted Answer

This furling jib was manufactured by North Sails, a recognized name in sailmaking known for their commitment to innovation and sail performance.
