Question 1

What is a laminate jib and what are its advantages?

Accepted Answer

A laminate jib is constructed by bonding layers of materials, typically including reinforcing fibers (like polyester, aramid, or carbon) sandwiched between layers of Mylar film. This construction provides superior shape retention, reduced stretch, and a lighter weight compared to traditional woven Dacron sails. These characteristics contribute to better performance, especially in maintaining an efficient aerodynamic profile under varying loads and wind conditions.

Question 2

What are the dimensions and sail area of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This laminate jib has the following dimensions:

Sail Area: 44 m²
Luff: 15.25 m
Foot: 5.3 m
Leech: 14.2 m

Question 3

What is the purpose of the UV protection, foam, and 6mm luff tape on this sail?

Accepted Answer

UV Protection: This is a sacrificial layer, typically a strip or coating, applied to the exposed parts of the furling sail. Its purpose is to absorb harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, protecting the sail’s fibers and stitching from degradation and extending the sail’s lifespan.
Foam: A foam luff pad is sewn into the luff of the sail, tapering thicker towards the leading edge. When the sail is partially furled or reefed, this foam helps to fill out the roll and maintain a flatter, more efficient shape, reducing bagginess and improving performance.
6mm Luff Tape: This refers to the diameter of the rope or tape sewn into the luff of the sail, which slides into the groove of your furling system’s headstay foil. It is crucial that the luff tape size matches your furler’s groove for smooth hoisting, furling, and safe operation. Please verify compatibility with your specific furler model.

Question 4

What type of boat is this jib suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This 44m2 laminate jib was originally used on a boat approximately 40 feet in length (“ex 40 footer”). Sails of this size are generally suitable for cruising yachts and club racers around the 40-foot range, offering a balance of performance and manageability for a small crew or single-handed sailing.

Question 5

What is the condition of this used jib from Resail?

Accepted Answer

This jib is offered in “Used” condition. Resail specializes in providing high-quality, proven used sails, giving them a second life. Each sail is inspected to ensure it meets performance and reliability standards for cruisers and club racers.

Question 6

How should I maintain this laminate jib?

Accepted Answer

Cleaning: Avoid using harsh or caustic cleaning agents, especially chlorine bleach, as these can damage laminate sailcloth. Instead, clean the sail with fresh water and a mild soap, such as Woolite, using a soft brush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.
Storage: Always ensure the sail is completely dry before storing to prevent mildew growth, which can be particularly problematic for laminate sails if moisture gets trapped between layers. Store the sail loosely rolled or flaked in a cool, dry place.
UV Protection: When the sail is furled on the boat, ensure the UV sacrificial strip is fully exposed to protect the primary sailcloth. For extended periods of storage or when not in use, consider a protective cover for the furled sail.
Handling: Avoid unnecessary flogging of the sail, as this can stress the material and stitching. When furling, ensure proper tension and avoid rolling the sail too tightly to prevent permanent creases.
