Question 1

What are the key specifications of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This is a new 45m² furling mainsail from Elvstrom Sails. Its dimensions are: Luff 16.3 meters, Foot 5.23 meters, and Leech 16.81 meters. It is constructed from X-Cut Dacron with EMS (Vertical Battens) technology.

Question 2

What does 'X-Cut Dacron EMS (Vertical Battens)' signify?

Accepted Answer

X-Cut Dacron refers to a cross-cut panel layout, a traditional and durable method where the sailcloth panels are arranged horizontally, perpendicular to the leech. This design is known for its longevity and is a common choice for cruising sails.
EMS stands for Elvstrom Mainsail System, which incorporates continuous vertical battens. These battens provide crucial support for the leech, helping the sail maintain its shape, reduce flogging, and ensure efficient performance whether fully deployed or reefed. They also function as reefing points to stretch the luff.

Question 3

What are the advantages of a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Furling mainsails offer several benefits for sailors. They provide ease of handling, allowing for quick deployment or stowing of the sail, often from the cockpit, which enhances safety, especially in challenging weather. They also enable infinite reefing points, making it simple to adjust sail area to suit varying wind conditions. When furled, the sail is protected from UV exposure and environmental factors, contributing to its longevity.

Question 4

Is this mainsail suitable for boats other than a Harmony 47?

Accepted Answer

While this mainsail was originally designed for a Harmony 47, its suitability for other vessels depends on the specific dimensions and furling system of your boat. The critical measurements are the Luff (16.3m), Foot (5.23m), and Leech (16.81m). It is essential to compare these dimensions against your boat’s mast and boom measurements, as well as the specifications of your in-mast furling system, to ensure compatibility and proper fit.

Question 5

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This 45m² Furling Mainsail is new. It has not been used previously.

Question 6

How should I care for this Elvstrom furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

UV Protection: Always ensure the sail is fully furled when not in use to protect it from damaging UV rays, which can significantly reduce its lifespan.
Drying: Ensure the sail is completely dry before furling for extended periods to prevent mildew growth. If wet, furl it loosely to promote air circulation and drying.
Cleaning: Rinse the sail with fresh water regularly to remove salt and dirt. For more thorough cleaning, use a mild detergent solution and a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
Avoid Flogging: Minimize situations where the sail is flogging (flapping violently), as this can weaken the sailcloth and degrade its shape over time.
Professional Inspection: Consider having your sail professionally inspected and cleaned annually by a sailmaker to maintain its performance and extend its life.
