Question 1

What is an Elvstrom EPEX Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The Elvstrom EPEX Mainsail utilizes a patented membrane technology from Elvstrøm Sails. This technology involves a 100% custom design where individual fibers are precisely placed according to load paths to achieve optimal shape stability and performance. The sail components are bonded under extreme and constant vacuum, which removes all air and compresses the membrane layers. EPEX is not a single material, but a concept that can incorporate various high-performance fibers such as Technora, Vectran, and carbon.

Question 2

What are the advantages of a fullbatten mainsail?

Accepted Answer

A fullbatten mainsail offers several advantages for both cruising and racing. Key benefits include:

Enhanced Shape-Holding: Full-length battens help maintain the designed airfoil shape of the sail in various wind conditions, improving overall performance.
Increased Longevity: By preventing the sail from flogging (violent snapping back and forth) during hoisting, lowering, reefing, or tacking, full battens significantly reduce wear and tear on the sailcloth, extending its lifespan.
Easier Handling: Full battens can make the mainsail easier to stack neatly on the boom or into a sail cradle, which is beneficial for shorthanded sailing.
More Sail Area: They allow for a larger roach (extra area towards the top of the sail), providing more drive, especially in lighter airs.

Question 3

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This 49m2 Fullbatten EPEX Mainsail has the following approximate dimensions:

Sail Area: 49 m²
Luff: 15.99 meters
Foot: 5.25 meters
Leech: 16.7 meters

Question 4

Is this mainsail suitable for a Dufour 430GL?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally specified for a Dufour 430GL. While the listed sail area of 49m² is slightly less than the typical standard mainsail area of 52m² for a Dufour 430GL, the luff, foot, and leech dimensions are critical for fit. We recommend comparing these specific dimensions (Luff: 15.99m, Foot: 5.25m, Leech: 16.7m) with your boat’s rigging measurements to ensure proper compatibility and performance.

Question 5

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This 49m2 Fullbatten EPEX Mainsail is in new condition.

Question 6

How should I care for an Elvstrom EPEX mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care is essential to maintain the performance and longevity of your EPEX mainsail. Here are some key recommendations:

Drying: Never leave wet sails packed or furled for more than a few days to prevent mildew. Always wash with fresh water and ensure the sail is completely dry before storage.
Cleaning: For spots or blemishes, use warm water or a mild solution of dishwashing liquid with a soft brush. Do not use any chemical solvents or harsh detergents, as these can damage the sail material and void the warranty.
UV Protection: Always use a sail cover when the sail is not in use or when mooring to protect it from harmful UV radiation.
Storage: For winter storage, ideally roll your EPEX sail from the top to the foot to prevent permanent creases. Ensure it is clean and dry.
