Question 1

What is a furling jib and what are its main advantages?

Accepted Answer

A furling jib is a headsail designed to be rolled around a rotating forestay or a furling rod, typically controlled from the cockpit. This system allows sailors to easily deploy, stow, or reduce the sail area (reef) without leaving the cockpit, enhancing safety and convenience, especially for single-handed sailing or in heavy weather. Furling also helps protect the sail from UV exposure and other environmental factors when stowed, contributing to its longevity.

Question 2

What materials are used in the construction of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This furling jib is constructed using Ekko and XRP sailcloth from Elvstrom Sails. The Ekko line, which includes eXRP laminates, is a sustainable choice where the primary components like the film, taffeta, and polyester fibers are made from recycled plastics. XRP fabrics are known for their high strength-to-weight ratios, efficient fiber inlays, and good UV, stretch, and tear resistance, making them suitable for racing and club racing headsails. The sail also features Solartex Silver UV on the starboard side, a solution-dyed polyester material specifically designed for UV protection on roller furling headsails, which helps reflect heat and sunlight.

Question 3

What are the specific dimensions and sail area of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This furling jib has a sail area of 51 square meters. Its luff (leading edge) measures 17.7 meters, the foot (bottom edge) is 6.1 meters, and the leech (trailing edge) is 16.9 meters. It also features a 6mm luff rope and four short vertical battens.

Question 4

Is this sail suitable for a Hanse 461?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this 51m2 furling jib is specified to fit a Hanse 461. The sail area of 51m2 is consistent with the 100% jib area for a Hanse 461, which is approximately 546 sq ft (around 50.72 m2). The Hanse 461 is a performance cruiser designed to accommodate such rigging.

Question 5

How should I maintain this furling jib?

Accepted Answer

To ensure the longevity and performance of your furling jib, regular maintenance is important:

Rinsing: Periodically rinse the sail and furling system with fresh water to remove salt and dirt, especially after use in saltwater.
UV Protection: While the sail has Solartex Silver UV protection, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when not in use should be limited. Ensure the UV strip is covering the exposed parts when furled.
Furling/Unfurling: Always furl and unfurl the sail carefully, maintaining light tension on the furling line and sheet to prevent flogging and unnecessary stress on the sail.
Halyard Tension: Ease the jib halyard slightly when leaving the boat for extended periods to prevent permanent luff stretching.
Inspection: Regularly inspect the sail for any minor tears or damage and address them promptly to prevent them from worsening. Check the furling system for smooth operation and lubricate bearings as recommended by the furler manufacturer.

Question 6

What does 'New' condition mean for this product on Resail?

Accepted Answer

While Resail primarily specializes in providing high-quality used sails a second life, this specific 51m2 Furling Jib is in ‘New’ condition. This means it has not been previously used on a boat and is being offered as a brand-new sail, manufactured by Elvstrom Sails.
