Question 1

What is an Elvstrøm Sails EMS Furling Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

An Elvstrøm Sails EMS (Elvstrøm Mainsail System) Furling Mainsail is an in-mast furling mainsail designed with full continuous vertical battens. These battens provide crucial support for the leech, maintaining the sail’s shape whether it is fully deployed or reefed. They also function as reefing points, helping to stretch the reefed luff and ensuring the sail remains flat and efficient.

Question 2

What are the specific dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail has the following dimensions:

Sail Area: 52 m²
Luff: 16.72 m
Foot: 5.58 m
Leech: 17.39 m

Question 3

What type of boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally designed for a Bavaria 46CR. It is suitable for a Bavaria 46 Cruiser or other sailing yachts with compatible mast and rigging dimensions that can accommodate a 52m² furling mainsail with the specified luff, foot, and leech measurements. The Bavaria 46 Cruiser typically has a mainsail area around 47.0 m² to 55 m² for furling versions, making these dimensions a close fit.

Question 4

What are the advantages of a laminate sail with vertical battens?

Accepted Answer

Laminate sails with vertical battens offer several advantages:

Improved Shape Retention: Laminate construction provides superior shape holding and longevity compared to traditional woven sails, resisting stretch and distortion under pressure.
Enhanced Performance: The material allows for more efficient energy transfer from the wind, potentially leading to increased boat speed.
Effective Reefing: Vertical battens support the leech and act as reefing points, helping to maintain a flat and efficient sail shape even when reefed.
Easier Handling: Such sails are generally easier to furl and unfurl, and the battens contribute to smoother furling operations by stretching the sail and preventing folds.
Increased Sail Area: Vertical battens allow for a larger sail area, providing more power.

Question 5

How should I care for and maintain this laminate furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care and maintenance will prolong the life of your laminate furling mainsail:

UV Protection: Minimize exposure to direct sunlight when the sail is not in use, as UV rays can degrade the material. Always use a boom cover if the sail is left on the boom.
Cleaning: Rinse the sail with fresh water to remove salt and dirt, then ensure it is completely dry before furling or storing to prevent mildew. For localized stains, use a mild household soap with lukewarm water; avoid strong detergents or bleach on laminate sails.
Handling: Avoid prolonged flogging of the sail, as this can lead to premature wear. When leaving the boat for extended periods, ease the main halyard and outhaul slightly to prevent permanent stretching of the luff and foot.
Storage: Store the sail in a dry, well-ventilated location. If rolling the sail for storage, ensure it is completely dry and avoid creating sharp creases.
Professional Inspection: Regular inspection by a sailmaker is recommended to address any minor wear and tear before it becomes a significant issue.

Accepted Answer
