Question 3

Which boat was this mainsail originally intended for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally specified for a Dehler 42. The provided sail area of 54.1 m² is consistent with standard mainsail sizes for this model, which typically range from 52.5 m² to 57.5 m².

Question 4

Who is the manufacturer of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was produced by Elvstrom Sails, a renowned sailmaker with over 60 years of experience known for designing and building high-quality sails.

Question 5

How can I verify if this mainsail will fit my sailboat?

Accepted Answer

To ensure proper fit, compare the mainsail’s Luff (P), Foot (E), and Leech measurements with your boat’s specific rig dimensions. You will need to measure the distance from the top of your boom to the top of your mast (P), and the length of your boom from the mast to the clew outhaul (E). While this sail was designed for a Dehler 42, individual boat rigs can vary, so direct measurement is recommended.

Question 6

What are the benefits of a full batten mainsail?

Accepted Answer

A full batten mainsail offers several advantages:

Improved Shape Retention: Battens running from leech to luff help maintain the sail’s designed shape, optimizing performance across various wind conditions.
Reduced Flogging: Full battens stabilize the sail during hoisting, lowering, and reefing, significantly reducing flogging, which is a primary cause of sail wear and extends the sail’s life.
Easier Handling: They can make the sail easier to stack on the boom or into a sail cradle, benefiting shorthanded cruisers.
Increased Sail Area: Full battens support a larger roach (the curved part of the sail beyond a straight line from head to clew), allowing for more sail area and efficiency.
