Question 1

What is a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

A furling mainsail is a type of mainsail designed to be rolled up for storage and control, typically either into the mast (in-mast furling) or into the boom (boom furling). This system makes sail handling easier, extends the lifespan of the sail, and can improve onboard safety by allowing quick reduction of sail area.

Question 2

What are the key specifications of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This furling mainsail has a sail area of 57.27 m². The luff measures 19.59 meters, and the foot measures 6.4 meters. It was produced by Elvstrom Sails.

Question 3

What condition is this sail in?

Accepted Answer

This sail is in “As New” condition, having been used only once. Resail focuses on giving proven sails a second life, and this item reflects that commitment to quality and sustainability.

Question 4

What type of boat is this sail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This sail was originally made for a Jeanneau 57. To determine suitability for other vessels, it is crucial to compare the sail’s dimensions (luff: 19.59m, foot: 6.4m, sail area: 57.27m²) with your boat’s specific mast and boom measurements and sail plan.

Question 5

How do I maintain a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper maintenance of a furling mainsail includes:

Always heading upwind before furling or deploying the sail.
Keeping light tension on the outhaul while furling to avoid wrinkles.
Easing the mainsheet fully to take pressure off the sail.
Cleaning and lubricating mast hardware annually.
Inspecting the sail for stretch or a baggy luff every season.
Avoiding furling when the sail is flogging or under load.
Cleaning the luff track with fresh water and applying a dry lubricant like McLube.

Question 6

What are the benefits of using a furling mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Furling mainsails offer several advantages, including:

Ease of Handling: They allow for easy reefing and un-reefing from the cockpit, making sail adjustments convenient, especially for short-handed crews.
Convenient Storage: When sailing is complete, the sail can be quickly rolled up without the need to flake and cover it.
Safety: By enabling quick reduction of sail area, furling systems contribute to managing strong winds and maintaining boat stability.

Question 7

How do I ensure this sail will fit my boat?

Accepted Answer

To ensure proper fit, carefully measure your boat’s mast luff length and boom foot length. Compare these measurements with the sail’s luff (19.59m) and foot (6.4m) dimensions. It is also advisable to consult your boat’s sail plan or a professional sailmaker for precise compatibility.
