Question 1

What type of mainsail is this?

Accepted Answer

This is a 57m2 Full Batten (5) EKKO Mainsail from Elvstrom Sails. Full batten mainsails feature battens that extend from the leech to the luff, providing a structural framework to support the sail’s shape and resist distortion.
The ‘EKKO’ designation indicates that this sail is part of Elvstrom Sails’ more sustainable product line, utilizing recycled materials in its construction, such as polyester taffeta, film, and polyester fibers sourced from recycled plastics.

Question 2

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The dimensions for this mainsail are:

Sail Area: 57m2
Luff (P): 17.27m
Foot (E): 5.34m
Leech: 17.55m

Question 3

What is the condition of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is listed in ‘As new’ condition. At Resail, ‘As new’ means the sail shows minimal to no signs of use, reflecting its high quality and readiness for a second life on the water. We carefully inspect all sails for any signs of wear, such as tears, fraying seams, or UV damage, to ensure they meet performance and trust expectations.

Question 4

Which boats is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom EKKO Mainsail was originally designed for a Dufour 470. The Dufour 470 typically has a mainsail area around 57m2, with a P (luff) of approximately 17.40m and an E (foot) of about 5.42m, making these dimensions a close match.
To determine if this sail is suitable for another vessel, it is crucial to compare its Luff (P) and Foot (E) measurements against your boat’s rig dimensions. It is recommended to measure your boat’s actual P and E dimensions, allowing some room for stretch.

Question 5

What are the advantages of a full batten mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Full batten mainsails offer several advantages for both cruising and racing sailors:

Improved Shape Retention: Full-length battens help maintain the sail’s designed aerodynamic shape, enhancing performance in various wind conditions.
Increased Longevity: By stabilizing the sail and preventing excessive flogging during hoisting, reefing, and maneuvers, full battens significantly reduce wear and tear on the sailcloth and seams, extending the sail’s lifespan.
Easier Handling: They can make the sail easier to stack on the boom or flake into a sail cradle, which is beneficial for shorthanded sailing.
Greater Sail Area: Full battens allow for a larger roach, which means more sail area and potentially more power.
