Question 1

What is an Elvstrom EPEX 5 Full Batten Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This is an Elvstrom EPEX 5 mainsail, which utilizes Elvstrom Sails’ patented membrane technology. EPEX sails are known for their custom fiber placement, optimized for load distribution, resulting in outstanding shape stability and performance. The construction involves vacuum lamination to create a strong, solid membrane free of air pockets, designed for high-performance applications.

Question 2

What are the key dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The mainsail has the following key dimensions:

Sail Area: 61.2 m²
Luff: 17.3 meters
Foot: 6 meters

Question 3

What are the benefits of a full batten mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Full batten mainsails offer several advantages for both cruising and racing. They provide improved shape-holding, which contributes to better performance across various wind conditions. Full battens also enhance the sail’s longevity by reducing flogging, the violent movement that can damage sailcloth. Additionally, they can make sail handling easier, particularly when stacking or flaking the sail on the boom, and can function as effective reefing points.

Question 4

What does 'used for one season' imply about this sail's condition?

Accepted Answer

A sail described as ‘used for one season’ suggests it has experienced limited exposure to the elements and operational stress compared to older used sails. However, as a laminate sail, it is still important to inspect for any signs of wear and tear, such as potential delamination, which can occur over time due to UV exposure, saltwater, and general use.

Question 5

How can I determine if this mainsail is suitable for my yacht?

Accepted Answer

To assess suitability, compare the luff (17.3m) and foot (6m) measurements of this sail with your yacht’s mast and boom dimensions (P and E measurements). The sail area of 61.2 m² is close to the standard mainsail size for a Luffe 45 (approx. 62.3 m²), indicating it might be compatible with similar yacht types or a Luffe 45. It is recommended to measure your boat’s rig accurately to ensure a proper fit.

Question 6

How should I care for this Elvstrom EPEX mainsail?

Accepted Answer

For optimal care of this laminate sail, rinse it with fresh water and allow it to dry completely after use to prevent mildew and salt buildup. Store the dry sail in a well-ventilated area. Avoid using caustic cleaning agents, especially chlorine bleach, as these can damage laminate sailcloth. Small tears should be patched promptly. For more extensive cleaning or repairs, consulting a professional sailmaker is advisable.
