Question 1

What type of mainsail is this?

Accepted Answer

This is a new Elvstrom Sails 64m2 Fullbatten X-Cut Dura 45 Mainsail. It features a full-batten design for enhanced shape retention and durability, and an X-Cut panel layout, which is a traditional and robust construction method.

Question 2

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

The mainsail has a sail area of 64m². Its specific dimensions are:

Luff: 17.6 meters
Foot: 5.94 meters
Leech: 18.41 meters

These measurements refer to the forward, bottom, and aft edges of the sail, respectively.

Question 3

What are the advantages of a fullbatten mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Fullbatten mainsails offer several advantages, including improved shape-holding, increased longevity, and simpler handling. They significantly reduce flogging, which is a primary cause of sail wear, by stabilizing the sail during hoisting, reefing, and maneuvering. This design also helps maintain an efficient airfoil shape, contributing to better performance in various wind conditions.

Question 4

What material is the sail made from?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrom X-Cut Dura 45 Mainsail is constructed using a cross-cut (X-Cut) layout, typically made from woven polyester, commonly known as Dacron. This material is recognized for its durability, UV resistance, and cost-effectiveness, making it a reliable choice for cruising sails. The X-Cut design aligns strong fill yarns perpendicular to the leech, enhancing the sail’s strength and longevity.

Question 5

Which boat is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally designed for a Bavaria C45. However, sails can often be adapted to other boats if the luff, foot, and leech dimensions are appropriate for your specific rig. It is recommended to compare these dimensions against your boat’s maximum sail dimensions to ensure a proper fit.

Question 6

How should I care for and maintain this new mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maximize the lifespan of your mainsail, follow these care guidelines:

Avoid Flogging: Minimize prolonged flogging by trimming your sails promptly and reefing in strong winds.
Protect from Chafe: Prevent unnecessary contact between the sail and rigging by using patches in high-chafe areas.
Proper Storage: Roll or fold your sail correctly to prevent permanent creases, especially for winter storage.
UV Protection: Always use a boom cover when mooring to protect the sail from UV degradation.
Keep Dry: Never store wet sails for extended periods to prevent mildew. If possible, wash with fresh water and dry thoroughly.
Cleaning: Use warm water or a lemon solvent for cleaning; avoid harsh chemical detergents that could damage the material.
