Question 6

What are the general characteristics of a gaff mainsail?

Accepted Answer

A gaff mainsail is a four-cornered, fore-and-aft rigged sail where the top edge (head) is supported by a spar called a gaff. This design allows for a larger sail area compared to a triangular Bermuda rig for a given mast height, which can be beneficial for power and stability, particularly on traditional boats. Gaff rigs often have a lower center of effort, contributing to improved stability and reduced heeling. They typically use two halyards (throat and peak halyards) to raise and control the gaff, allowing for fine adjustments to the sail’s shape.
