Question 1

What are the key dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This 8.5m2 mainsail has the following key dimensions:

Sail Area: 8.5 m²
Luff: 2.6 m
Gaff: 2.5 m
Foot: 3.44 m
Leech: 5.13 m

Question 2

What type of sail is this and what is it made from?

Accepted Answer

This is a new Dacron Gaff Mainsail. Dacron, a form of polyester, is a widely used sail material known for its strength, resistance to UV degradation, and abrasion resistance, making it suitable for cruising and club racing. Gaff rigs are a traditional style that can offer an increased sail area compared to the mast length, potentially reducing stress on the mast and rigging.

Question 3

What boat is this sail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally made for a Herreshoff 12.5. The Herreshoff 12.5 is a classic 15 ft 10 in (4.8m) daysailer, typically featuring a gaff rig with a standard sail area of about 140 sq ft (approximately 13 m²). As this specific sail has an area of 8.5 m², which is smaller than the standard Herreshoff 12.5 mainsail, it is important to carefully verify all dimensions (luff 2.6m, gaff 2.5m, foot 3.44m, leech 5.13m) against your specific boat’s rig and intended use to ensure proper fit and performance.

Question 4

Does this mainsail include battens?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is designed for partial battens, but the battens themselves are not included with the sail.

Question 5

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is in new condition. Even new sails on Resail contribute to our mission of extending the lifecycle of marine equipment, offering a sustainable choice for sailors while supporting the reduction of waste in the maritime industry.

Question 6

How should I care for a Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

To maximize the life and performance of your Dacron mainsail:

Minimize Flogging: Avoid allowing the sail to flap excessively, as this can degrade the cloth.
UV Protection: Dacron is resistant to UV, but prolonged exposure can still cause wear. Keep the mainsail covered when not in use.
Cleaning: Rinse the sail with fresh water regularly, especially after sailing in saltwater. For hard stains, a mix of household bleach and soap can be used on Dacron, followed by a thorough rinse.
Drying & Storage: Always ensure the sail is thoroughly dry before folding or rolling for storage to prevent mildew.
Chafe: Reduce chafe by preventing the sail from rubbing against rigging or other parts of the boat.
