Question 1

What are the key features of this 85m2 Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This 85m2 mainsail is an Elvstrom Sails Fullbatten EPEX sail, offered in “As New” condition. It was originally designed for a Wauquiez Centurion 57. Key features include:

EPEX Technology: Elvstrom’s patented membrane technology ensures exceptional shape stability and performance through custom fiber placement and a vacuum lamination process, which eliminates air pockets and creates a strong, durable membrane.
Fullbatten Design: Full-length battens provide better shape-holding, significantly extend the sail’s lifespan by reducing flogging, and facilitate easier sail handling. They also allow for a larger roach, increasing sail area and power.
Dimensions: The sail has a Luff of 19.76m, a Foot of 7.36m, and a Leech of 20.9m, with a total sail area of 85m2.
Condition: Classified as “As New,” indicating minimal to no signs of use or wear, retaining its original integrity and performance characteristics.

Question 2

What does "EPEX" technology mean for a sail?

Accepted Answer

EPEX is Elvstrom Sails’ patented flagship membrane technology. It involves a highly precise manufacturing process where individual fibers are strategically placed according to load paths to create a custom-designed sail. The membrane is then laminated under an intense, constant vacuum. This process eliminates air bubbles, compresses the layers, and results in a strong, solid membrane with outstanding shape stability and performance. EPEX sails are known for their durability and are suitable for both racing and performance cruising.

Question 3

What are the benefits of a fullbatten mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Fullbatten mainsails offer several advantages for cruisers and club racers. They provide enhanced shape retention, which improves the sail’s performance across various wind conditions. By stabilizing the sail and preventing excessive flogging during hoisting, lowering, and reefing, full-length battens significantly increase the sail’s longevity. Additionally, they contribute to easier sail handling, especially when stacking the sail on the boom, and can allow for a larger roach, which increases sail area and power.

Question 4

How can I determine if this mainsail is suitable for my yacht?

Accepted Answer

To determine suitability, you should compare the sail’s dimensions with your yacht’s mast and boom measurements. This mainsail has a Luff of 19.76m, a Foot of 7.36m, and a Leech of 20.9m. It was originally designed for a Wauquiez Centurion 57, a yacht typically featuring a mainsail area around 87m² with a P (luff) of approximately 19.80m and an E (foot) of about 7.50m. We recommend accurately measuring your yacht’s rig (I, J, P, E dimensions) and consulting with a professional sail expert or rigger to ensure a proper fit and optimal performance for your specific vessel.

Question 5

What does "As New" condition signify for a pre-owned sail?

Accepted Answer

For Resail, “As New” signifies that a pre-owned sail is in excellent, near-perfect condition, showing minimal to no signs of use or wear. This means the sail retains its original shape, integrity, and performance characteristics, making it ready for immediate use without requiring repairs or significant maintenance. This classification reflects Resail’s commitment to offering high-quality, proven sails that are prepared for an extended life on the water.

Question 6

What is the recommended care and maintenance for an Elvstrom EPEX mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care is essential to maximize the lifespan of your EPEX mainsail. Always rinse the sail with fresh water after use to remove salt, and ensure it is thoroughly dry before furling or storing to prevent mildew. Utilize a sail cover when moored to protect against UV degradation. For long-term storage, particularly over winter, it is recommended to roll EPEX sails from top to foot to avoid permanent creases. For cleaning, use warm water with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft brush; strictly avoid chemical solvents or harsh detergents, as these can damage the sail material. Regular inspection of stitching, batten pockets, and fittings is advisable, and consider professional servicing for comprehensive checks and any necessary repairs.
