Question 1

What is a Fathead Mainsail and what are its advantages?

Accepted Answer

A Fathead Mainsail, also known as a square-top mainsail, features a wider head compared to traditional triangular mainsails. This design adds sail area, particularly higher up where wind speeds are generally stronger, contributing to increased power and improved aerodynamic efficiency.
Key advantages include:

Increased Power: The larger area aloft provides more drive, especially in lighter winds.
Improved Aerodynamics: The square head helps reduce drag and generates more lift, enhancing overall performance.
Easier Tuning and Depowering: The design allows the top of the sail to twist more effectively as wind increases, automatically depowering the sail in gusts and making tuning simpler.
Stability: Fathead mainsails typically use full-length battens, which help stabilize the sail’s shape and can also function as reefing points, allowing for a flatter, more efficient reefed sail.

Question 2

What is EPEX sailcloth technology?

Accepted Answer

EPEX is a patented membrane technology and the flagship product of Elvstrøm Sails. It involves a 100% custom design where individual fibers are precisely placed according to a load path design, ensuring optimal distribution of fibers across the entire sail.
This advanced construction provides exceptional shape stability and performance. During production, components are bonded under an extreme and constant vacuum, which removes air bubbles and compresses the membrane layers, resulting in a strong and solid membrane without air pockets or crushed fibers. EPEX sails are renowned for their durability and ability to maintain shape and performance over many years.

Question 3

What are the dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This Elvstrøm EPEX Fathead Mainsail has the following key dimensions:

Sail Area: 90m²
Luff: 18.05m
Foot: 6.24m

Question 4

For which boat type is this mainsail suitable?

Accepted Answer

This new 90m² Fullbatten EPEX Fathead Mainsail was originally designed for a Catana Ocean Class catamaran. The Catana Ocean Class is a high-performance catamaran, typically around 15.75 meters (51.67 feet) in overall length, built for bluewater sailing, offering a blend of performance and comfort for long-distance cruising.
Fathead mainsails are commonly found on multihulls and some monohulls, especially those without a backstay or equipped with double backstays that allow for the sail’s wide top. Given its design and material, this sail is well-suited for performance-oriented cruising or club racing on a compatible catamaran or monohull.

Question 5

What is the condition of this mainsail and what is Resail's approach?

Accepted Answer

This specific 90m² Fathead Mainsail is in New condition. While Resail specializes in giving high-quality used sails a second life, we also occasionally offer new sails that align with our mission to provide sustainable sailing solutions without compromising performance or trust.
Our commitment is to extend the lifecycle of sails, reduce waste, and lessen the environmental impact of sailing, offering a smart alternative to purchasing new sails when appropriate. This sail, though new, supports the broader goal of making proven sailing equipment accessible.

Question 6

What kind of warranty is offered with this Elvstrøm EPEX mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Elvstrøm Sails provides an extended three-year guarantee against delamination of the EPEX membrane caused by a production defect. If delamination occurs within the first two years, the sail will be replaced in full. In the third year of use, compensation is reduced by 30% of the original price.
It is important to inform Elvstrøm Sails in writing of any defects without delay once you become aware of them. Additionally, if you register your Elvstrøm Sails within two years of delivery, you may be eligible for a free service check at a local Elvstrøm SailPoint.

Question 7

How should I care for and maintain this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care and maintenance are important for extending the life and performance of your mainsail:

UV Protection: Always cover your mainsail with a protective cover when it’s not in use to shield it from harmful UV rays.
Cleaning: Rinse your sail with fresh water after use to remove salt and dirt, and ensure it is thoroughly dry before storage to prevent mildew. For deeper cleaning, use a mild, sail-specific soap, avoiding harsh detergents or bleach, especially on laminated sails.
Avoid Flogging: Minimize situations where the sail is flogging (flapping violently) as this can cause wear and tear.
Inspection: Regularly inspect your sail for any minor tears, loose stitching, or chafe. Patch small tears promptly.
Lubrication: Keep your mast track clean and lubricated with a dry Teflon-based lubricant to ensure smooth hoisting and lowering.
Professional Check: Consider having your sail inspected by a professional sailmaker at least once a season.
