Question 1

What is an Inmast Furling Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

An Inmast Furling Mainsail is a type of mainsail designed to roll up and stow inside a hollow mast. This system allows for easy reefing and dowsing of the sail directly from the cockpit, making it particularly convenient for short-handed or solo sailing. A key benefit is that there is no need to flake the sail on the boom or use a sail cover after use, as the sail is self-stowing within the mast.

Question 2

What are the specific dimensions of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail has the following dimensions:

Luff: 14.3 meters
Foot: 5.1 meters
Leech: 14.67 meters
Sail Area: 34 square meters

Question 3

Which boat model was this sail originally designed for?

Accepted Answer

This Inmast Furling Mainsail was originally intended for a Hanse 388. While designed for this specific model, it may be suitable for other yachts with comparable mast and boom dimensions. It is always recommended to verify the exact measurements against your boat’s specifications for proper fit and performance.

Question 4

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is new.

Question 5

Who manufactured this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was produced by Elvstrom Sails. Elvstrom Sails is an international sailmaker founded in 1954 by Olympic sailor Paul Elvstrøm. Based in Denmark, they are recognized as a leading European manufacturer, designing and producing sails for both racing and cruising purposes.

Question 6

Does this inmast furling mainsail include battens?

Accepted Answer

No, this inmast furling mainsail does not include battens. Inmast furling sails often omit battens to ensure smoother and simpler furling into the mast. While this can result in a flatter sail shape and less control over performance compared to battened sails, it significantly enhances ease of handling and reduces the risk of jamming.
