Question 1

What are the dimensions and specifications of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This is a 10.5m² jib. Its specific dimensions are:

Sail Area: 10.5 m²
Luff: 8.4 m
Foot: 2.94 m
Leech: 7.4 m

It comes with brass hanks and battens, and is supplied with a sail bag. It was originally designed for a 24-foot sailboat.

Question 2

What material is this jib made from?

Accepted Answer

This jib is constructed from NorlamXi06. NorLam is a type of lightweight and low-stretch Mylar laminate sailcloth, often incorporating Dacron, Pentex, or Kevlar taffetas. North Sails produces its paneled laminate sailcloth, including NorLam, using advanced laminators to ensure high quality, lighter weight, higher strength, and increased durability.

Question 3

What are the benefits of battens in a jib?

Accepted Answer

Battens in a jib offer several advantages, primarily by supporting the leech of the sail. They help maintain the sail’s shape, reduce leech flutter, and can significantly increase the longevity of the sail by minimizing damage from flogging. This allows the sailmaker to design a more effective aerodynamic shape and potentially add more sail area.

Question 4

What are brass hanks and why are they used?

Accepted Answer

Brass hanks are fittings designed to attach the luff of a jib to the wire forestay. They are typically cast or forged from marine-quality brass and fitted with a stainless steel spring for secure attachment. Brass hanks are known for their quality, reliability, and ease of fitting, providing a positive lock over the stay.

Question 5

What is the condition of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This jib is brand new and has not been previously used.

Question 6

Who is the producer of this jib?

Accepted Answer

This jib was produced by North Sails, a company recognized for its advances in sailmaking technology and development of sail materials.

Question 7

How should I care for a NorlamXi06 jib?

Accepted Answer

To maintain a laminate sail like one made from NorlamXi06, it is important to:

Keep it dry: Always store the sail dry and free of salt to prevent mildew and material degradation.
Protect from UV: Avoid prolonged direct sunlight exposure, especially in hot climates, as UV light can break down bonds within the material, leading to shrinkage and potential cracks.
Minimize flogging: Reduce the amount of time the sail flaps in the breeze, as flogging can degrade cloth properties and shorten its lifespan.
Clean gently: If washing is needed, use warm water and mild soap. Avoid strong detergents or harsh scrubbing, especially on laminate sails.
Roll for storage: Rolling the sail, rather than folding on the same creases, can help prevent permanent creases and maintain sail shape.

Regular inspection for minor damage and professional checking at the end of the season can also extend the sail’s useful life.
