Accepted Answer

The dimensions of this furling jib are:

Sail Area: 10.2 m²
Luff: 7.98 m
Foot: 2.59 m
Leech: 7.39 m

Question 3

What type of boat is this jib suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This furling jib was originally designed for a J70 sailboat. The J70 is a competitive sportboat known for its light and responsive handling. Given its dimensions and original application, it is suitable for J70 class boats or other similar sized sportboats and club racers requiring a jib with these specific measurements.

Question 4

What are the benefits of a Dacron sail?

Accepted Answer

Dacron, a woven polyester fabric, has been a standard sail material for decades due to its balance of durability, ease of use, and reliability. Key benefits include:

Durability and Longevity: Dacron offers good resistance to UV rays, chafe, and abrasion, contributing to a long service life.
Versatility: It performs reliably in a wide range of conditions, making it a trusted choice for both cruising and club racing.
Shape Retention: The fabric is treated with heat, pressure, and resin coatings to stabilize the weave and enhance shape retention.
Ease of Maintenance: Dacron sails are relatively easy to care for and repair.

Question 5

What does 'furling jib with zipper in the luff' mean?

Accepted Answer

A furling jib is designed to be rolled around the forestay for easy deployment and storage from the cockpit. The addition of a zipper in the luff typically refers to a system where the sail can be attached to the forestay by zipping it around, rather than feeding a luff tape into a foil. This design can simplify hoisting and dousing, and in some configurations, a zippered bonnet (an additional section) can be removed or added to adjust the sail area, effectively converting a larger genoa to a smaller working jib.

Question 6

How should I care for and maintain this Dacron furling jib?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends the life of your Dacron furling jib. Here are some guidelines:

Minimize Flogging: Avoid letting the sail flap excessively in the wind, as this degrades the cloth properties.
UV Protection: Always furl the sail with the UV cover on the outside if equipped, or store it in a sail bag when not in use, as direct sunlight can cause material breakdown.
Clean Regularly: Hose down the sail with fresh water after use, especially if exposed to salt spray, and allow it to dry thoroughly before folding or rolling for storage. Salt crystals are abrasive and can foster mildew. For dirtier sails, a mild soap solution can be used, ensuring thorough rinsing.
Avoid Chafe: Protect the sail from rubbing against rigging or other boat parts by covering potential chafe points.
Proper Storage: Store sails dry and either rolled or folded to avoid sharp creases that can damage fibers. Store in a well-ventilated, clean environment.
