Question 1

What type of sail is this and what are its key features?

Accepted Answer

This is an 11.5m2 furling jib from Gaastra, designed for convenient handling. A furling jib, also known as a jib reel, is a headsail that rolls around a forestay, allowing sailors to easily deploy, reduce, or stow the sail from the cockpit. This makes sail handling more efficient, especially for single-handed sailing or smaller crews. Key features of this specific sail include a 4mm luff tape and grey UV protection on the starboard (SB) side.

Question 2

What are the dimensions of this furling jib?

Accepted Answer

The dimensions of this Gaastra furling jib are:

Sail Area: 11.5 square meters
Luff (leading edge): 8.85 meters
Foot (bottom edge): 3 meters
Leech (trailing edge): 7 meters

Question 3

What does "As New" condition mean for this sail?

Accepted Answer

“As New” indicates that the sail is in excellent, near-perfect condition, showing minimal to no signs of wear. This means it retains its structural integrity and performance characteristics, offering a reliable option for extending the life cycle of sailing equipment.

Question 4

What boat size is this furling jib suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This 11.5m2 furling jib was originally designed for an 8-meter sloop. When considering suitability for your boat, it’s important to compare the sail’s luff, foot, and leech dimensions with your boat’s forestay length and sail plan to ensure a proper fit with your furling system.

Question 5

What is the purpose of the 4mm luff tape and grey UV protection?

Accepted Answer

The 4mm luff tape is a crucial component that allows the sail to securely and smoothly attach to and slide within the furling system’s foil extrusion. The size of the luff tape is specific to the furling system and ensures efficient sail handling.
The grey UV protection on the starboard side is a sacrificial strip of fabric designed to protect the main sailcloth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation when the sail is furled. UV rays can weaken sail fibers and stitching over time, so this protective layer helps to extend the sail’s lifespan and preserve its performance.

Question 6

How should I care for a furling jib to ensure its longevity?

Accepted Answer

Proper care is essential for extending the life of your furling jib. Key maintenance tips include:

Regular Cleaning: Keep the furling drum and foils clean and free of salt and dirt by washing them with soap and fresh water.
UV Protection: Always ensure the UV sacrificial strip is properly covering the sail when furled to shield it from sun exposure. Periodically check the condition of the UV strip and its stitching.
Careful Furling/Unfurling: Maintain light tension on the furling line when unfurling and on the jib sheet when furling to prevent lines from tangling and to reduce stress on the sail. It is recommended to furl the jib on a broad reach to minimize stress.
Halyard Tension: Ensure the halyard tension is correctly set for your furling system to prevent issues like the halyard wrapping around the headstay.
Inspection: Regularly inspect the furler system and sail for any signs of wear or damage.
