Question 1

What are the key specifications of this furling jib?

Accepted Answer

This is a NEW North Sails Dacron 5Oz Furling Jib with a natural UV protection strip. It features a 5mm luff tape and three vertical batten pockets. The sail has a total area of 13.5m², with a luff of 9.97m, a foot of 3.03m, and a leech of 9.11m.

Question 2

What does "Furling Jib with UV" signify for my sailing?

Accepted Answer

A furling jib allows you to easily roll and unroll the sail from the cockpit, enhancing convenience and safety. The integrated UV protection strip, typically along the leech and foot, acts as a sacrificial layer to shield the sailcloth from harmful ultraviolet rays when the sail is furled and exposed to the sun. This helps to prevent degradation of the sail’s fibers and stitching, extending its lifespan.

Question 3

Is this sail new or pre-owned?

Accepted Answer

This specific sail is new, as indicated by the product data. While Resail primarily focuses on giving high-quality used sails a second life, this item is offered in new condition.

Question 4

Which boat size is this jib designed for?

Accepted Answer

This furling jib was originally designed for a 33-footer, with an LP (luff perpendicular) of 2.8. The LP measurement is used to determine the sail’s overlap and suitability for a particular boat’s rig.

Question 5

What are the benefits of Dacron 5Oz and vertical batten pockets?

Accepted Answer

Dacron 5Oz: Dacron is a woven polyester fabric known for its durability, affordability, and ease of use, making it a standard choice for cruising and club racing sails. A 5oz weight indicates a good balance of strength and manageability for many sailing conditions. Dacron is also resistant to UV degradation.
Vertical Batten Pockets: Vertical battens in furling jibs help to maintain the sail’s shape, especially along the leech, allowing for a fuller, more efficient sail profile. They contribute to smoother furling and easier reefing by providing support and rigidity, preventing folds when the sail is rolled up.

Question 6

How should I care for this furling jib to ensure its longevity?

Accepted Answer

To maximize the lifespan of your Dacron furling jib, especially with its UV protection, consider the following:

Regular Cleaning: Periodically clean the sail and furler system with fresh water and mild soap to remove salt and dirt.
UV Protection: Always ensure the UV strip is on the outside when the sail is furled to protect the main body of the sail from sun exposure.
Ease Halyard: When not in use, ease the halyard slightly to prevent excessive tension on the luff, which can cause stretching over time.
Inspection: Regularly inspect the sail for any signs of wear, especially on the UV strip and stitching, and address minor repairs promptly.
