Question 1

What are the key dimensions of this 16m2 Dacron Mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This Dacron mainsail has the following key dimensions:

Sail Area: 16 square meters
Luff: 10 meters
Foot: 3 meters
Leech: 10.3 meters

Question 2

What is Dacron and why is it a common material for mainsails?

Accepted Answer

Dacron is a woven polyester fabric that has been a standard material for sails for decades. It is known for its excellent balance of durability, affordability, and ease of use, making it a popular choice for cruising and club racing sails.
Key properties of Dacron include its strength, resistance to UV degradation, and abrasion resistance, which help it withstand marine environments. It also offers good shape retention and is relatively easy to maintain and repair.

Question 3

What do '2 reefs' and 'partial battens' mean for this sail's performance?

Accepted Answer

2 Reefs: Reefing is the practice of reducing the sail area to maintain the vessel’s stability and control in stronger winds. Having two reefing points allows sailors to incrementally decrease the sail area as wind conditions change, enhancing safety and comfort on the water.
Partial Battens: Battens are flexible strips inserted into pockets in the sail. Partial battens, which extend part way into the sail from the leech, help support the sail’s designed shape, control curvature, and prevent the leech from fluttering. They contribute to better sail efficiency and can reduce wear from flogging. Partial battens are often lighter, less expensive, and easier to adjust compared to full-length battens.

Question 4

What is the condition of this used mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is in used condition. As part of Resail’s commitment to providing quality used sails, it has been professionally washed by our partner, Zonklaar. We aim to extend the lifecycle of sails, offering proven equipment for cruisers and club racers.

Question 5

How do I ensure this mainsail will fit my sailboat?

Accepted Answer

To ensure this mainsail fits your sailboat, you should compare its dimensions (Luff: 10m, Foot: 3m) with your boat’s specific mast and boom measurements. The critical measurements for a mainsail are typically referred to as ‘P’ and ‘E’.

P (Mainsail Luff Length): This is the maximum distance from the top of your boom to the highest point the mainsail can be hoisted on your mast.
E (Mainsail Foot Length): This is the maximum distance along your boom from the aft face of the mast to the outermost point the mainsail’s clew can be pulled.

Measure these dimensions on your boat and compare them to the sail’s Luff (10m) and Foot (3m) to confirm compatibility. It’s important that the sail’s dimensions do not exceed your boat’s maximum ‘P’ and ‘E’ measurements.

Question 6

What maintenance is recommended for a Dacron mainsail to extend its life?

Accepted Answer

Proper care can significantly extend the life of your Dacron mainsail:

Rinse Regularly: After use, especially in saltwater, rinse the sail thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt crystals and dirt, which can be abrasive and corrosive.
Dry Completely: Always ensure the sail is completely dry before folding and stowing to prevent mildew growth.
Protect from UV: Ultraviolet (UV) light is a primary enemy of Dacron. When not in use, keep the mainsail covered with a boom cover or remove, flake, and stow it in a sail bag below deck or off the boat.
Avoid Flogging: Minimize the time the sail spends flapping or luffing, as this can quickly degrade the cloth and stitching.
Store Properly: Roll the sail rather than folding it with heavy creases to avoid damaging the fibers. Store it in a sail bag to protect it from animals, insects, and excessive heat.
Inspect Periodically: Regularly check for any signs of wear, chafe, or damage, and address them promptly to prevent larger issues.

Question 7

What are the advantages of choosing a used mainsail from Resail?

Accepted Answer

Choosing a used mainsail from Resail offers several advantages, aligning with our mission for sustainable sailing. By giving proven sails a second life, you contribute to reducing waste and the environmental impact associated with new sail production. This approach provides a smart alternative for cruisers and club racers seeking quality equipment without compromising on performance or trust.
Resail was founded from a lifetime of sailing experience, including competitive racing and running maritime businesses, driven by the question of what happens to sails when they are replaced. Our marketplace is built on the belief that there is always a second life for sails, connecting high-quality used sails with those who need them across Europe and beyond.
