Question 1

What are the key specifications of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail is made from durable Dacron fabric and has a sail area of 20.8 square meters. It features one full batten and three partial battens, along with one reef point for adjusting sail area. The luff measures 10.65 meters, the foot is 3.23 meters, and the leech is 11.12 meters. It was produced by Elvstrom Sails.

Question 2

What is the condition of this mainsail?

Accepted Answer

This particular mainsail is new. While Resail primarily focuses on offering high-quality used sails to extend their lifecycle and promote sustainable sailing, we occasionally have new sails available through our network, ensuring they find a suitable boat and continue their journey on the water.

Question 3

Which boat types is this mainsail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This mainsail was originally noted for a Sunbeam 32. However, it is crucial to verify compatibility with your specific boat by comparing the sail’s dimensions (luff: 10.65m, foot: 3.23m, leech: 11.12m) against your boat’s mast and boom measurements. We recommend checking your boat’s rig specifications (P, E, I, J measurements) or measuring your existing mainsail to ensure a proper fit.

Question 4

What are the characteristics and benefits of a Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Dacron, a woven polyester fabric, has been a standard for sail materials for decades due to its balanced properties. It offers a combination of durability, ease of use, and shape retention, making it a reliable choice for cruising and club racing. Dacron sails are known for their excellent abrasion resistance, longevity in moderate conditions, stable behavior over time, and ease of repair, contributing to cost-efficient replacement cycles. The material is also naturally resistant to UV degradation.

Question 5

How should I care for and maintain this Dacron mainsail?

Accepted Answer

Proper care extends the life of your Dacron mainsail. After use, especially in saltwater, rinse the sail thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt crystals, which can be abrasive. Ensure the sail is completely dry before folding or rolling it for storage to prevent mildew. Store the sail in a well-ventilated, clean, dry environment, protected from direct UV sunlight. Avoid sharp creases when folding. Minimize ‘flogging’ (flapping in the wind) as this can degrade the cloth properties. For cleaning, use mild soap and water; a heavily diluted bleach solution can be used for mildew, followed by a thorough rinse. Annual professional inspection and cleaning are also recommended.
