Question 1

What is a Coversail / HA Jib and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

A Jib is a triangular headsail set forward of the mast, primarily used to increase a sailboat’s speed and improve balance. A High Aspect (HA) Jib is typically taller and narrower, designed for efficient upwind performance. The term “Coversail” in this context refers to a sail that can be hoisted over a furled Genoa, often used as a heavy weather or storm jib. This allows sailors to set a smaller, more robust sail without the need to fully furl and remove the primary genoa, enhancing safety and ease of handling in strong winds.

Question 2

What are the key dimensions of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail has a total area of 26 m². The key dimensions are:

Luff (forward edge): 13.2 meters
Foot (bottom edge): 4.4 meters
Leech (back edge): 12 meters

Question 3

What type of boat is this sail suitable for?

Accepted Answer

This 26m² Coversail / HA Jib was originally designed for a 40-foot sailboat. A “40-footer” generally refers to a yacht with a length overall of approximately 12 to 12.5 meters. While originally intended for a specific boat, sails can often be adapted to other vessels with similar rig dimensions.

Question 4

What is the condition of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail is new. Resail offers both used and new sails, extending the lifecycle of sails and providing options for various sailing needs.

Question 5

Who is the producer of this sail?

Accepted Answer

This sail was produced by Schulz. Walter Schulz is known as the founder of Shannon Boat Company, established in 1975, which designs and builds bluewater sail and power yachts. Shannon Boat Company has a reputation for high-quality construction and offshore integrity, with Walt Schulz overseeing design and production.

Question 6

What are the advantages of using this type of sail?

Accepted Answer

Using a Coversail / HA Jib offers several advantages:

Versatility in changing conditions: It can be hoisted over a furled genoa, providing a quick and safer option for sail reduction in increasing winds, avoiding dangerous foredeck work.
Improved performance: A High Aspect Jib can enhance upwind performance and boat balance, allowing the boat to point higher into the wind.
Durability: Often designed for heavy weather, these sails are typically robust.
Sustainability: Acquiring sails through Resail, whether new or used, supports the mission of reducing waste and extending the lifecycle of marine equipment.
